Had one and compared it to the R8B and SDR-14. Obviously they outclassed
the Eton due to $$. But, I also compared it to the Sony ICF-SW100S I have
and didn't find it better. The Sony is pretty deaf using the onboard
ferrite, but still better than the Eton. With a passive loop, the Sony is
quite good. So, I sold the Eton. It was worth a try, though!
On my last vacation, I brought the Palstar R30CC, a ferrite rod mounted on a
camera tripod, and a 12v 7ah battery to run it. With the DX Engineering
preamp, it really was better than any portable I've used. Sony, Eton, and
others.
The Eton is bigger than a phone book. The Sony is a bit bigger than a pack
of cigarettes. Pocket size. The Sony has AM, FM, SW and LW. Also does
USB/LSB and has a sync detector that can be selected for upper or lower
sideband. The drawback is that it costs the same as the Eton. Around $400.
And, there is not an easily usable external antenna connection on the Sony.
There is a small jack of about a 1/8" size, but I have not been able to get
it to work on the BCB.
When I go on vacation, the Palstar goes with me. I can see that trying to
get the large ferrite rod antenna on a plane could be difficult. I'm sure
on xray it looks like something ominous.
