[IRCA] The Changing Face of ULR Transoceanic DXing

Hello All,

Within the past month, as experienced TP and TA DXers have increasingly
been swept into the Ultralight radio DXing craze, a transforming force has
been gaining momentum, causing the direction of ULR transoceanic DXing to have
a significant change.

Whereas previously the users of stock SRF-59's and SRF-M37V's would sit
patiently and wait for exceptional propagation peaks to log their rare TP's
and TA's (with the exception of Allen Willie, of course), the recent influx
of highly experienced AM-DXers has caused a sudden boom in experimentation and
tinkering, with the focused goal of making these tiny receivers as sensitive
and selective as possible for DXpedition use. This month there has been
major progress both in the creation of effective external antennas (and coupling
circuitry to the ULR's), and also great success in replacing the tiny ULR
antennas with huge ultra-sensitive transplants, making the pocket radios
competitive in sensitivity with the best large portables. Selectivity mods are
being added, and during the upcoming Spring Equinox, DXers will be deploying
tiny radios with fantastic overall capability. The ULR experimentation boom
has been the center of AM-DX technical effort for the past few months, and has
provided our community with exciting new discoveries.

We can't wait for the exciting future, and hope that all of you will
join us in this thrilling new niche of the hobby!

          73, Gary DeBock
