Re: [IRCA] 1520 Follow Up #2
I really need to get caught up on the airchecks I've taped while
traveling; I haven't listened to the material I recorded from WDSL and
WSIC while I was in the region last September. I'll try to do that in
the next few days.
I did listen a bit, live, to WDSL during my brief stay in Mocksville.
That pretty much consisted of a bit of morning drive, which was a very
local show from the WSIC studios. I don't recall actually hearing a WDSL
(or WSIC) legal ID at any point, just the "WSIC 1400 & 1520" IDs, but
I'll go back and check the tape to see for sure.
I can say this: I saw no evidence that there are any active local
studios in Mocksville for WDSL. Mocksville is a very small community,
and it's close enough to the Triad that the Winston-Salem/Greensboro FM
stations (and even some of the AMs, like WSJS) are local signals. I
suspect WDSL couldn't survive as a stand-alone local station, which is
why it ended up as a WSIC simulcast. (The flip happened in April 2007,
according to 100000watts.com data; the old WDSL website is still up,
with outdated links, at http://www.wdslradio.com/.)
What likely happened here is that whatever automation is being used to
turn the WDSL transmitter on or off probably failed, and it'll probably
take someone being sent over from Statesville to fix it. That's just a
guess on my part. I listened to 1520 for a little while as I was driving
home from WXXI tonight and couldn't make anything out under semi-local
WWKB here.
