Re: [IRCA] All Hail the SRF-59!

Hello Kevin,

Your detailed early impressions of the SRF-59 are very similar to mine,
but I hope you will now take the next giant step, and go for the "big game"
of TP-DX contacts. Your location is not far from mine in Puyallup, so I
would recommend you try for the powerhouses of JOAK-594 and JOIB-747 around local
sunrise. Both should be relatively QRM-free around the Seattle suburbs.

In my detailed testing for the SRF-59 review, I performed a complete
disassembly of the radio. The analog tuning thumb wheel is connected to the
dial pointer by a geared plastic linkage, which should engage freely on new
units, but may possibly bind if not assembled correctly. If the issue really
bothers you, you may attempt disassembly by removing the two rear screws and
gently separating the back case from the front, which will disconnect the
linkage from the geared tuner. Then, like me, you can play around with alignment
of the tuner and linkage, until you find the "sweet spot" where everything
moves freely, and the dial frequency exactly matches that of the tuner. Sound
fun? It isn't, believe me.

The SRF-59 is truly an exceptional bargain, however, and I'm very happy
that you and others are discovering the great pleasure of exceptional DX on
a very inexpensive radio. Now go get those TP's!

               73 and Best Wishes,

               Gary DeBock
