Patrick,
This discussion has been particularly interesting to me, not only
because I have met you personally, but because I have lived in Hawaii for 3 years
(Oahu), and have visited practically every place you have considered living
(Guam 3 times, Philippines, etc., in the Navy).
Guam has a hot and humid climate, compared to the Pacific Northwest.
It also did have some issues of native resentment against members of our
ethnic group, although as you might imagine, sailors are not always prime models
of courtesy themselves. The DX environment (as I recall from around 1980) was
dominated by the strong Japanese stations booming in from the north, and
there were some strong locals to contend with. As far as the "American"
connection, it certainly seemed like a foreign country to me, although you may avoid
immigration hassles, at least.
I have never been to the island of Kauai, but having DXed from Oahu for
3 years (in the shadow of the Honolulu locals), I found it very interesting.
The local QRM was bad, but when frequencies were open, it was astonishing
how strong distant DX could be. Depending on your financial resources, an
oceanfront estate on the west coast of Kauai would seem ideal, although you
should again be sensitive to the fact that we are an ethnic minority in Hawaii,
and there may be some resentment to our presence in Kauai, like there was on
Oahu. Another factor to consider is that owners of prime oceanfront estates
may not be thrilled to have antenna experimentation being conducted adjacent
to their properties, hi.
If neither of these locations seems ideal, maybe it would be helpful to
remember that your Seaside location is already the envy of about 99% of the
DXers on the list, including myself!
