I lived in Dorchester (Boston), MA from 1937 until 1959, then in Dedham, Braintree, and Hyannis, MA, then for a short stay in Bristol, CT. In those days my favorite station was WHDH-850. They broadcast Braves, Bruins, Celtics, and Red Sox games, and I think Harvard U. football. I do remember Carl de Suze and Dave Maynard. When I sang with the Jamies (1959-1960) Dave Maynard had us on his afternoon (?) radio show. Do remember that Leo Egan had an afternoon bandstand type show, and we made that gig. "BZ" was hot in those days for music. WBZ-FM had a hot jazz show at night with Bill Marlowe. He loved playing Basie, Sinatra, Garner, and Bruebeck tunes. And the guys I hung out with thought it was hip referring to Sinatra as the "Generalissimo". Do beleive that WBZ axed Marlowe, for what I don't know. But yeah, WHDH and "BZ", those stations where big in those days.
Then one night I picked up a station in West Virginia. Station was WWVA. Oh yeah, bigtime DX. Oh, I heard stations from Hartford, Nashua, Albany, and New York City, but hearing WWVA, that was truly good stuff.
How the hell did I get on this gig? Hi?
Feeling a bit better these days.
