Charles,
Your daytime bandscan was definitely NOT a bust, at least for my
purposes. My logs from the Mayport DX time period (1973-1974) were lost in the
Navy shuffle, so your bandscan was very useful in helping me remember the
stations I used to hear, as an STG2 on the USS Patterson (DE1061) using a Sony
TR-6400.
Like you, I went to boot camp in Great Lakes (1971), but then was sent
to Key West, FL for Basic Electronics school (Key West, surrounded by salt
water, was very interesting for DX). My first ship as an STG3 was the
Patterson, which changed homeports from Newport, RI to Mayport in 1973. DXing from
the East Coast was great, with convenient sunset ship covering the country
over a 3-hour period, unlike DXing from Washington, where sunrise skip (and
losing sleep) was the most effective.
Also like you, I spent a lot of time in the WestPac area, on the USS
Badger and USS Harold E. Holt (1975-77), SIMA in Pearl Harbor (1977-79) as a
sonar repair specialist, and as the sonar gang LPO (STG1) on the USS Parsons
(DDG-33), overseas homeported in Yokosuka, Japan (1980-81). My wife (KC7BAR)
is also a WestPac souvenir, a Chinese from Hong Kong who I met in 1980. She
(and her Chinese friends) helps to identify any unknown Chinese TP audio clips
anybody may have.
73, Gary
