Patrick,

I/we operated WISK-1110 on a nearly-vacant frequency, and it was
audible all over Indianapolis. WISK had no radials, and I estimate
that it was putting down about 1 mV/m at a mile.

We were using a CB antenna atop a 58-foot mast as top loading.

Solid out to two miles.

My 10-W transmitter had enough harmonic suppression that I
could hear CHU-3330 well atop our 3rd harmonic right there
next to the transmitter.

Edward A Peterson, the FCC Field Engineer (from the FCC Chicago
office) who did us the honor of taking us off the air, confirmed
that field intensity.

Then WQRK used the 18-foot high heavily top-loaded "T" antenna,
that put 2.6 mV/m at a mile.

1540 limited our day coverage (as I wished) by ground conductivity
loss. 1550 limited our night coverage by co-channel QRM (as I
wished). Coverage was solid to about 1.5 miles (meaning it over-
rode TVI, power-line RFI, etc.).

We didn't want to operate 1560 kHz, as that would put us only
30 kHz away from WNTS (then WGEE)-1590.

A problem with operating 1550 fulltime was that my boss, Martin
R Williams, consulting engineer (and former owner of WFMS-95.5),
measured frequency of WCVL-1550 Crawfordsville (IN) and WCTW-
1550 New Castle (IN). If we operated on 1550 days, he would
have difficulty PFMing WCVL and WCTW.

When we operated WISK on 1550, there was the same trouble. Mr.
Martin KNEW I was the CE of WISK, and complained (with a twinkle
in his eye) that a pirate station was making it hard for him to
PFM WCVL and WCTW. Hint taken.

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaargh quoth the retired pirate.
