Gary,

I have only heard KOHI with 12 watts once on the coast as far as I can
remember. That was back a few years ago when the 1 KW was stronger. 
   KVRI does well, as I can hear it down here during the day & night.
At least they are directional to the North, so they aren't too strong. I
still hear Denver & St. Louis on 1600 at night.
