Hi James,
I believe the "formula" is more like a length to
height ratio - 5 to 1. For example 150' length to 30
ft height. I use impedance transformers and I have
found that in areas of poor ground conditions (here in
the Rocky Mountains) I run a counterpoise ground wire
on the surface of the ground. That seems to help
directivity. Quite frankly, the EWE antenna is a
wonderful antenna.
