KBRT doesn't use the night power - and if I remember the map I once had
someone run for me, the night power wouldn't even put an
interference-free signal over Avalon, the main community on the island.

The SS UHF you're thinking of is KAZA, channel 54, licensed to Avalon,
but with no other current connection to the island. Its studios are on
the mainland, and its transmitter is on Mount Wilson, which is something
like 50 air miles from Catalina. I have a vague recollection that 54 may
have signed on with low-power from the island to keep its license alive,
but the only Catalina connection to 54 now is its legal ID once an hour.
