In the book America's Favorite Radio Station series creator Hugh Wilson
says that the idea for WKRP and several of the characters came from
people he knew at WQXI in Atlanta. He said that Johnny Fever was based
on Skinny Bobby Harper who later moved over to WSB. Gordon Jump, who
played Arthur Carlson, is also quoted as saying that his character was
based on a real person at WQXI and that person is the one who actually
orchestrated the infamous turkey drop when he worked for another radio
station in Texas.
