Keith,
SDTV will still be around for a long long time. First off, few
programmers are jumping up and down to go HD. Second if most did, there
is not enough space on cable systems or satellite to handle them. I
recently bought a Toshiba EDTV, better than SD, but not quite HD. It
gives me 480i/480p and is widescreen. I did not want HD, as there just
is not enough programming out there worth the expense to me. Plus a lot
of HDTV sets, the SD stuff looks quite poor on it. I am not into Sports
and what I watch is not available in HD anyway and may never be. The
mandate in 2009 I guess to go all digital for over the air channels. For
satellite, we have been watching digital for years anyway. The new
Toshiba I bought does have the built in digital tuner if I need one. But
the only over the air here are translators and who knows when they will
go digital. But I think the public is going to be more excited about
HDTV than HD Radio (As they call it).
I went looking through a few catalogs last night, including Radio
Shack and others. What I saw were pages and pages of not radios, but mp3
players. Only a few radios were there, but if you want mp3, you have a
huge choice from ones that will hold 250 songs to 5,000 songs and above.
By that, it is very easy to see where the industry is going. They sure
aren't interested in radio! Especially AM radio! However a few of the
mp3 players did have an FM radio included, not AM though. Just FM. Is AM
radio going to exist period in another 10 years? Good question. Maybe it
will be wide open to DX our hearts out with foreign stations, as
everyone else have left the AM band. We can hope though.
