These people have some huge ferrite rods, though never cheap.  I bought two
of the 24" x 1.5" size to test some time back.  Untuned they do pick up well
with a five turn pickup winding.

Don't know of a source for cheap ferrite.  Maybe some surplus place like
Fair Radio?
