  It did happen here in the NW of England around 2300utc. Using a pair of binoculars the effect was eerie. I don't know what Mars looks like close up but last night would be my best guess.

GA, but there's no sign of anything unusual. You can tell an eclipse is 
taking place as the moon is a bit dim and has a bit of a covered look to it,
