One last recommendation... I've used the Samsung YEPP MP3 recorder - 
model YP-MT6 (256 MB), also available as MT6X (512 MB) or MT6Z (1 GB), 
about the same size as the iRivers being discussed. Runs on one AA 
battery, features built-in FM radio with recording of the radio direct 
to MP3 (very nice while traveling), built in mic and line inputs for 
external recording. Mounts as a USB drive. Seen them on eBay from $10 on 
up.
