[IRCA] Double Hop QSL and QSL comments

Jim Renfrew, Holley NY

Although this is an FM QSL, some of the points raised deal with QSLing in
general. This is from the CE at KOMP, in response to my follow-up of a July
2006 double hop FM reception. Note what he says about the importance of
presenting a report that is clearly over the air instead of an internet
audio stream. Each of my letters offers a paragraph of explanation about
E-skip (or tropo), and I try to describe how the signal pops in for a few
minutes at a time.

By the way, I noticed, in doing a mass mailing of follow-ups in the last few
weeks, that nearly all of the original reports that contained an RDS
screenshot were answered on the first try. Maybe this gives some
authenticity to my claim of over-the-air reception?

Of the 70 reports I sent out ten days ago, I've received more than 20 back
in about a week. My first reports usually goes to the Station Manager, and
the follow-up to the CE. Maybe I should rethink that strategy.

"Thank you for yur recent QSL report. As an active ham I'm familiar with
Spradic E. Your description is typical. I note your zip code puts you in
or near Rochester NY and the closest two stations to our 92.3 are the 92.5
and 92.9 stations (92.9 is WBUF Buffalo, where I worked for a summer job in
1965 while going to college in Fredonia). If you're not familiar with it
check this web site out. http://www.v-soft.com/ZipSignal/default.htm

I graduated High School just outside of Buffalo in 1962.

FM DXing must be getting more difficult with the skepticism some stations
must have over real vs. internet streaming receptions. Your report is a
good description of actual receiving conditions. Dick Dale the DJ on duty
that day in July is no longer with us having received a larger market offer.

KOMP is owned by Lotus Broadcasting of where we also have 97.1 KXPT the
point, and two AMs 920 KBAD and 1460 KENO. I'm building a new 1100 AM KWWN
that should hit the air sometime in late May or June. We have a total of 23
radio and three LPTV stations in 10 markets mostly west of the Mississippi."
