Usually, ,I won't DX without a digital display dial.

If the signal isn't good, I begin taking notes.. what frequnecy I'm on and 
what music or talk programming I'm listening to plus a mention of a phone 
number.  

Radio locator may not be grgeat with coverage maps, but if you hear partial 
call letters and you kow what frequnecy you're on, you can do a search by a 
specific frequnency or list by call letetrs in alphabetical order and it makes 
things easy.
