I wish Bob Savage all the luck with his upgrade, but I think he's engaging
in wishful thinking about the potential for further significant improvements
in the signal strength at the pattern maxima. All he needs to do to
demonstrate this to himself is to compare a polar plot of the current
unadjusted pattern with a polar plot of the standard pattern as proposed in
the upgrade application. So what if the signal at some minimum is 100 times
the intended final value? How much difference does that make in the area
enclosed by the curves. My guess is not much. The pattern RMS is a
reflection of the area under the curves. What seem like huge errors
percentagewise in the signal strength at the minima have almost no effect on
the area enclosed by the curves, even though the same percentage difference
at a maximum would have a HUGE effect. I haven't looked at the patterns in a
while, but my guess is that, after the patterns are tuned up, the signal
strength at the maxima will increase by at most a few percent. If it snows
in Rochester between now and when the tuning is done, the effect at the
pattern maxima of the change in soil conductivity will dwarf the effect of
the tuning.
