Tim,

You might want to also consider an Icom R-75; Universal routinely sells 
them used for $399. Being newer, it may be more reliable than an older R71.

I have both an R70 & R-75 and, based on performance, if I had to choose 
between them I'd go with the R-75. Just my humble opinion, though.
