However did you guess? :-)

Yes, I was there - and am now back home for just a few hours before
heading off to the convention in the morning.

The story is long, complicated, and will be in next Monday's NERW at
fybush.com <ggg>, but in a nutshell, the developer that's taking WOR's
old site was apparently responsible for getting all the necessary
permits and notifying the authorities, and somewhere along the line the
local police chief wasn't properly informed.

The chief was legitimately concerned that drivers on the Turnpike (which
runs right next to the site) would be alarmed, particularly right after
the 9/11 anniversary, to see three 700-foot towers come tumbling down,
and he said the appropriate authorities hadn't been notified so that
they could deal with panicked drivers. He has a point there.

I suspect - and this is just a guess - that when the towers are finally
brought down, it'll be early on a weekend morning and they'll shut down
the west spur of the Turnpike when they do it.

Oh, and PS - the plan ended up not involving any explosives. They were
going to tighten the guy wires on two sides of the towers to max
tension, then cut the wires on the third sides to bring the sticks down.
Would have been a heck of a thing to see...wish they'd have figured this
out BEFORE I spent $$$ on a plane ticket and all that time flying down
and back!
