Someone said that the Pittsfield MA 1110 station has not been operating
according to the terms of its license. That may or may not be true.
Daytimers located to the east of the dominant Class A (this would include
the 1110 in Pittsfield MA; the station is more north than east of WBT, but
it's also quite a distance east) are now permitted to remain on the air (I
think with a power not exceeding 500W) until local sunset at the Class A. At
the daytimer's local sunset, the daytimer must reduce power so that its
0.025 mV/m 10% skywave contour does not overlap the dominant station's 0.5
mV/m groundwave contour. If Pittsfield is within WBT's 0.5 mV/m 50%
nighttime skywave contour (and I believe it is), the Pittsfield station is
supposed to sign off at Charlotte sunset. But if Pittsfield is outside that
contour, the Pittsfield station can remain on the air all night at greatly
reduced power--assuming that it has FCC authorization to operate at night.
BTW, KFAB goes ND at Charlotte sunrise rather than at Omaha sunrise. I would
think that this would cause quite a bit of interference during early morning
hours even within WBT's 0.5 mV/m groundwave contour. On the other ex-IB
channels that allow one of the Class As to operate with day facilities at
night (1080, 1530, and 1560), the more easterly station is allowed to
continue its daytime operation until sunset at the more westerly station.
Hence WTIC and WCKY remain ND until Dallas and Sacramento sunset, whereas
WQEW remain on day pattern until Bakersfield sunset.
