Doug,
I haven't done it before, but I've given it some thought.
The receiver is the prime concern. If it works well off DC, you've got
most of the problem licked.
Probe around the area and find a spot where QRM on the BCB is
lowest.
I've got a EWE out back on the property line. Forest on the other side of
the property line.
EWE's still noisy from QRM, but I haven't found out if I can knock down
the QRM by isolating the EWE ground from coax ground by using a toroid
transformer. Bet that would knock out some QRM. But now the EWE is next
to a detached garage which has AC power coming in on underground
lines.
For some frequencies, using the Space Magnet II (Amplified, shielded
ferrite loop) inside the house is QUIETER than the EWE out back (by 100
feet from the house).
BUT I THINK IT'LL WORK.
What will you use for batteries?

Hi
All,
I've been having the re-occuring thought of operating my Drake R8B (and
Kiwa loop) with DC from a shack in the back yard. The reason for my
thoughts are to get my radio away from the house and it's associated
electrical noises. I'm sure I can eliminate direct line noise by
disconnecting from the household supply but I am also interested in
knowing more about receiving un-wanted QRN direct from power lines posted
in front of or near the property as well as noise originating from the
neighbors house. I understand that the proximity and noise values between
the receiver and any noise source is important, but I'm interested to
know if anyone has tried or operates this way. Would checking first with
a portable give me an accurate enough reading on conditions?
Doe's anyone out there have any tips and are
there any associated drawbacks of running off of a battery (ies)?
Thanks and 73- Doug
PS. This "shack" is non-existant at the moment, but I need a
construction project for this summer, hi.
