Just heard 1070 "KVKK Verndale" (MN) at TOH, 2a.m. EST. Actually what I
heard was "KVKK Verndale and Mt. ......." couldn't get the rest of what Mount
xxx was. Brief fadeup serendipitously right at TOH. New for me of course, as I'm
not much of a domestic MW DXer. I have no idea if that's a good catch or not,
but KNX is very strong without using the phaser.
Playing with my new Quantum Phaser, after hearing Pat Martin talk about
trying for the C&W station on 1070. I've been trying for it the past 1.5
hours. I'm new to using a phaser; this Quantum Phaser had a number of problems,
from the pre-Christmas large batch that was sent out. Apparently there were so
many orders that Gerry farmed out the work to local folks, and that resulted in
a bunch of cold solder joints (which mine had) and missing jumpers, etc. I took
mine apart, traced out the circuit, reheated all the solder joints, replaced the
coax connectors with my preferred BNC type; replaced the power jack with my
preferred coaxial type. My unit now nulls properly, and I'll tweak the output
amp gain a little eventually, though it's working OK with the stock low gain,
and my antennas.
Very interesting to see how the nulls do not remain steady more than a
couple of minutes; retweaking brings the null back, but it won't hold very long.
I suppose that's the nature of skywave signals. But I'm completely inexperienced
using a phaser, so everything I observe is new to me when using it. Even
dropping loud KNX a little is worth it, but this drops it sometimes
completely to inaudibility.
