Greg,
My rule of thumb on f/ups, is to try a couple like you said. I have
never sent more than 2 or 3 at the most. If by then don't get a reply, I
go after another angle. I may phone the station, or in some cases even
visit a station. I have never been turned down for a QSL in walking in
the door. It still comes down to "PR" and stations generally are not
rude face to face if you are nice. It is easier to ignore a QSL request
through the mail. Plus, stations change people all of the time. Wait a
couple years and send that f/up again, or a re-log. Maybe 5 years, but
there is always a way to get that QSL nicely. KGRB-900-West Covina CA
and KDAC-1230-Ft. Bragg CA were "Black" stations for years and years.
The owners hated DXers and would not even talk to them. Why, I don't
know. Well, with KGRB, it took until the 90s to log it from here as they
don't get out that well. A year or so before, the station was sold. I
took a f/up, but I got a FAX QSL. In the case of KDAC, I visited the
station one year on my way back from LA. The station also had been sold
and the new owner was very friendly. Besides getting a nice full detail
QSL letter on letterhead from the CE in person, when I returned home I
also got another from the new owner. For the record, I tried to QSL KDAC
in 1969 and it took until 1995 to get one! So it still can be done.
