Hi Chris!
If you've been out of the game for a bit and were perhaps using the
original SDRplay unit, I think you'll find a lot of changes. Everything
is better!
I use several SDRs and my favorite is the Airspy HF+. I think several
others on this list use them to good effect on the AM broadcast band. I
do a lot of general listening, AM BCB included, and find the HF+ is the
best among what I use. Some reviewers say that it's best in its price
class. YMMV. It works with HDSDR, SDR Console, and the native SDR#
software. Unless I really need to see 6 - 10 MHz of bandwidth at a
time, very rare, then I use one of my HF+ units. There is a mod to make
it more sensitive below the BCB. The HF+ is limited from lowfer to 30
MHz, a gap, and then some VHF beginning around the the FM broadcast band
and up a ways. http://airspy.us
I've not used the SDRplay DUO or anything of theirs since the original
unit. You may find them a better fit so at least take a look. I know
many users love them. There are more expensive units, but I don't have
any direct experience with them, but others on the list do.

Having been out of DXing for several years due to antenna
restrictions, I am now able to put up some flags but getting back up
to DXing speed again is a challenge. Never what you call a power user,
I am fine with the basics but want to be able to take advantage of
what the new products and technology have to offer.
Finding most documentation available rather underwhelming, was
wondering if there are any support groups available and/or local DXers
to tap into.
