Is the 'SPUR'-4 a hybrid? Tube and transistor?
This is a side-effect of putting (new)filters
in old equipment with aging components (resistors, capacitors, coils, etc)
You can get unexpected results.
Quite often as CAPS age, especially in the audio circuits, you
take a performance hit. Sometimes the best solution is replacing
all the old electrolytic and paper-film caps with new ones..
Of course, not everyone is a tech nor has the inclination
to tackle such a project.
When I was doing my apprenticeship in a military ship-yard,
we would take radar, comms and sonar equipment out of every ship
on a rotating basis and go through manuals and spec sheets,
that were hundreds of pages long, replacing every resistor or
capacitor that did not meet spec.
Most users do not realise that, with all electronic equipment,
aging is a process that never stops regardless of what kind
of components are used.
