[IRCA] Domestic MWDX to Enid OK, July 21-August 11, 2018

--- Begin Message ---
All times and dates strictly UT [4 hours ahead of `ELT` during EDT; when changing times one must also change the dates for events in the 00-04 UT period to the previous date by ELT].

Rx: mostly DX-398 with internal antenna only or PL-880; NRD-545 with ALA-330S inside E-W or inside randomwire N-S; Nissan stock caradio as specified; IC-R75 with E-W longwire.

These logs are excerpts from my daily all-band reports, mainly SWBC, also VHF/UHF, sometimes, utility, ham, which may be found in several archives without much delay, such as
http://www.hard-core-dx.com/index.php?topic=Hauser

And compiled weekly along with extensive news from many other individuals and publications in DX LISTENING DIGEST:
http://www.worldofradio.com/dxldmid.html

All my MW DX reports starting August 2011 are archived in this forum with open access:
http://forums.wtfda.org/showthread.php?6543-MW-DX-from-Enid-OK-by-Glenn-Hauser/page69
[over 307,000 views! as of August 11, 2018]

These logs are in four sections, Canada [if any], Oklahoma [if any], rest of USA [if any], unidentified [if any], separated by ======= Within each, they are in frequency order

** CANADA. 1610 kHz, UT Sunday July 22 at 0543 UT, no doubt it`s CHHA,
Toronto, talk in Luso Portuguese, NOT Brazilian accent; mentions a
something radio.com and it`s not Vozes Latinas. 0549 UT more talk by
YL, mentions ``We are the Champions``, an English expression. Is this
an overnight subcontractor, or what?

Website program grid is still 2+ years out of date as of ``2016``:
http://chha1610am.ca/wp-content/uploads/2015/09/PostCard-CHHA-1610AM-2016.jpg
showing nothing but `All Night Music` after 1 am EDT = 0500 UT M-F,
and blank on Sat & Sun (Glenn Hauser, OK, WORLD OF RADIO 1940, DX
LISTENING DIGEST)

** CANADA. Re WOR 1940, European style Portuguese --- Glenn, I am not
surprised that you heard European style Portuguese, maybe also called
Luso-Portuguese, on CHHA [1610 kHz]. I do know, from my visits in
Western NY, that CHIN-FM, 100.7, has several hours of that kind of
Portuguese in the morning. So does CIAO, 530. This report is two years
old, itâs that long since Iâve been up there, but, those programs have
been on for a long time. The last time I was up there, I recorded
Spanish from CHHA for Carrie, more interesting than the typical Miami
or L.A. station. Canât find CHHA on an internet feed, can you? 73,
(Tim Hendel, AL, July 26, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

Hi Tim, There are Listen Live links on the home page,

Directly,

And I just checked - it works. 73, (Glenn to Tim, via DXLD)

** OKLAHOMA. 1000, July 28 at 0300 UT, on road back from OKC visit, at
Okarche junxion of US81 and State Hwy 3, surprised to find KTOK OKC
very weak, no match for the CCI, but can make out Dodgers baseball,
not OKC, but LA, including local LA PSA concerning ``H204LA`` about
water supply. Meanwhile, 930 WKY OKC is loud and clear, or rather
clear but dead air during ESPND break, soon resuming.

What`s with KTOK? The answer from its night direxional plot:
https://transition.fcc.gov/Bureaus/MB/Databases/AM_DA_patterns/1534041-120192.pdf
which is dated 21 Mar 2018 --- as if it changes over time? Hardly, but
most FCC AM Query plots display recent dates on them --- With two
tight major lobes, one NNW which explains why we hear it well in Enid,
and the other to the SE. Numerically for the fourth quadrant, in
theoretical, and standard field strengths:

 270 12.19 28.34
 275 15.26 29.94
 280 16.36 30.57
 285 4.68 25.76
 290 32.95 42.85
 295 47.06 55.51
 300 29.74 40.19
 305 18.08 31.62
 310 67.28 75.03
 315 63.38 71.19
 320 53.51 61.62
 325 317.80 334.64
 330 711.90 747.92
 335 1161.24 1219.56
 340 1557.18 1635.24
 345 1798.37 1888.46
 350 1829.59 1921.24
 355 1658.97 1742.10

I would say Okarche is roughly NW = 315 degrees from site in south
OKC. KTOK day and night power is the odd figure of 5.8 kW. Poor
Okarche, home of proto-Saint Stanley Rother, can`t listen to the
mostly far-right talkshows on KTOK. But pity the poorer would-be
listeners at 285!

Day pattern is not so squeezed, but still with a notch toward the NW,
as if faraway KOMO Seattle still need to be protected.
https://transition.fcc.gov/Bureaus/MB/Databases/AM_DA_patterns/1534041-120191.pdf

Here are daytime figures matching minimum signals in degree direxions:
305 529.02 556.05
310 489.69 514.80
315 505.66 531.54

While the maxima are:
135 1308.21 1373.85
345 1314.78 1380.75

BTW, three undefined sexions of bumpy US 81 between Okarche and Enid,
much of it finally under repair, according to signage, are named as
The President George W Bush Highway; the President George H W Bush
Highway; and The President Ronald Reagan Highway (not in order). They
are SO honored!!! Now, where, o where, are the Presidents Jimmy
Carter, Bill Clinton, Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton Highways? Not even
a President Donald Drumpf Highway; yet (Glenn Hauser, Enid OK, DX
LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 770, Aug 8 at 1113 UT, ``Newsradio 94.5 FM and AM 770 KKOB``, new ``Roswell`` movie to be made in Santa FÃ; 1116 UT anti-American commentary by Rush Limbaugh, making me want to puke. What a pity that NM`s #1 AM station purvey this crap (and also subordinate itself to an FM translator, which surely blox Duques from hearing 100 kW Gallup 94.5 line-of-sight at elevations in The Heights, 200 km/125 miles; now called KYAT with a Navajo name, and format/country).

KKOB 94.5 relay is K233CG, on Sandia Crest, 3251 meters AMSL, with 250 watts direxional WSW across the city, says FCC FM Query. KKOB already had its own full-power Cresttop FM on 93.3, but separately programmed. {full-power here means deliberately reduced from 100 kW ERP due to extreme height above average terrain elevation advantage.}

Back to 770: I should not be hearing this big dominant signal at 5:13 am MDT, pre-sunrise, certainly not the 230-watt fill-in from Santa Fe, but the 50 kW main transmitter from the North Valley of ABQ, which is supposed to be nulling toward us and WABC, so either the pattern is way out of whack or they are just running non-direxional day pattern already. (BTW, no sign of TPs on 774, not in season yet, also edged by music from 780 KSPI Stillwater.)

Speaking of ABQ, later this morning at 1350-1455 UT, I catch repeat of the new season premiÃre of `Better Call Saul` on AMC cable. I`ve never followed this nor its sequel `Breaking Bad` despite the ABQ locations, out of general distaste for the subject matter, no matter how great the acting be reviewed; but decided to give this a chance. Hmmm, I don`t think I`m hooked for any more episodes (Glenn Hauser, OK, ex-Albuquerque, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

HI Glenn, You wrote: "1116 UT anti-American commentary by Rush Limbaugh, making me want to puke. What a pity that NM`s #1 AM station purvey this crap"..

So damn true! That station is a travesty and waaay too conservative for the city, if not for all of our blue state. I can't even listen to their traffic report without catching the end of ignorant, xenophobic opining (Heath Hall, Albuquerque, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 990, August 1 at 2037 UT on caradio about 18 miles N of Enid
on US 81/60/64, bandscan is not much different than inside Enid, but I
do hear an ID in passing from KRSL Russell KS, also as on 98.1 FM
which is a mere translator. 990 is 250 W ND day, at about the edge of
its Ogalalla groundwave, 267 km = 163 miles. KTOK 1000 splatter is a
little less of a problem here (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
