This is what I have also heard, re the pronunciation..

Minor detail for historical sake  ... Gilbert and Ellice (note
spelling)  (The Ellice are now Tuvalu, one of the places in
the world at serious risk of totally disappearing under
water with the slightest rise in sea levels)

Read the paperback book "The Sex Lives of Cannibals" by
Maarten Troost who spent 2 years on Tarawa. Pretty funny
and interesting. So much for the dream of the Pacific "Island
Paradise" he says. You can find it on Amazon.

Incidentally he confirms the odd pronunciation of "kiribas"
as compared to the spelling.
