Similar to what Richard reported from Oklahoma, Asian signals dropped off dramatically after 1310 here, resulting in somewhat of a clunker session for the usual TP's (at least during most of the daylight period). The only compensating factor was a fairly good signal from 738-Tahiti around 1340, the first decent appearance of the Polynesian big gun here this new season.
My session started off with a predawn band check at 1230, which revealed a somewhat promising situation with potent signals on 594, 693, 774 and 972. After setting up the FSL in the back yard around 1255 I noticed that the 1566-Jammer was back for the eighth day in a row, pulsing HLAZ's Japanese service with its buzzing-bee tone until 1257, when it abruptly went QRT. The Jammer wasn't particularly strong, but it was better than the anemic HLAZ. At the 1300 TOH 693-JOAB was able to get its 3 + 1 pips in at a very good level, but Asian propagation went on a serious plunge around 1310, sending even the Japanese big guns down into the noise. With the increasing daylight around 1330 I noticed a carrier rising on 738, which seemed impossible for BEL2 in the middle of such lousy Asian conditions. My suspicions were confirmed when the FSL was re-directed to the Southeast, bringing in a fairly good signal from 738-Tahiti with rhythmic R&B music. The signal wasn't quite up to Rockwork ocean cliff strength but it definitely wasn't bad for this mediocre, landlocked location. I checked a few other big gun DU frequencies and noticed a weak Oz pattern on 594, 774 and 828 (these are all NHK big gun frequencies as well, but the modified ICF-2010 spotting receiver can distinguish between their SSB carriers with its 30" loopstick). Late in the session 594-JOAK made a solo run against the propagation grain to come up to a very good level with NHK news just prior to the 1400 TOH, but all the other Asians seemed to have packed it in long before-- victims of the negative "sunrise enhancement." Overall the session would have been a real clunker except for the 738-Tahiti appearance, and it seems likely that if Oz carriers could make it into this DU-dead zone a much better location like Victoria must have had some good results.
738 Radio Polynesie Mahina, Tahiti Female R&B music at fair to good level briefly at 1340; first appearance of the new season

1566 Jammer + HLAZ The pulse jammer keeps its daily appointment to buzz HLAZ's Japanese service at 1255, then goes QRT at 1257
