Rick,

It is the Auroral Level. The higher the number, the more unlikely DX
will be good to the North. AU Level at 10 can bring in lots of DX to the
South. In my case (Oregon), the dial would be filled with Californians,
Hawaiians, DUs, etc. Rather than Canadians and Northern Asians (JJs,
etc).
