There is only one radio “survey” of
importance, and that is Arbitron. Arbitron does not interview people, over the
phone or in person. They use diaries that respondents fill in and mail back. For
every entry a listener makes, there are check boxes for AM or FM and for the
listening location, such as home, car and work. Very few people fail to enter
this data. And, the most important thing, listeners generally fill in the
station listened to boxes by putting dial position… often as many as 80%
of such entries are dial position alone.. because that is what listeners “see”
on digital display radio dials. On the other hand, I have seen stations that are among
