David,
As things stand today, and if AM radio stayed analog, I totally agree
that AM would not be going anywhere. But consider for a moment that
stations do go into IBOC bigtime and the public does not buy into it,
then as far as the guy with the $30 portable, the AM band will be loaded
with noise from end to end. But it that happened, you can be sure the
switches on the transmitters, would turn the IBOC off.
