Not sure there will be a verdict, per se. I did have a chance to try it
further on Sunday. The only place I could mount it was too close to my
tower for any nulling tests, though I did note a 30db null on local
WPRO-630. The proximity of the tower at 20 feet killed any real nulls.

I did try it into the R8B, and y'all were right about a preamp being needed.
I ordered the DX Engineering model that is highly regarded. It'll be here
by next weekend. The other problem with the R8B is the incredible
electrical noise I had with it plugged in. This noise was totally absent
when the antenna was plugged into the radio in the truck. The R8B was on
the tailgate, so nothing was really different except the extension cord.
Odd. I'll run the Drake off the battery next time to see what that does.

I need to buy some pressure treated lumber to make a portable mount for the
copper loop. Then, modify it to be portable. I'm also looking at putting
two small hydraulic pumps together so it can be hand-rotated from a 30 foot
distance or so. Again, just thinking out loud.

The Sony will serve you well. Just work with the seller to complete the
deal. Explain that you are new to the eBay game and need some prompting on
how to get the payment out.

As to the dealing with the wife on buying radio gear?? Er...Ah... (gulp)...
I think you're on your own there. Sorry!! (grin, duck, and runlikeheck).
