I made a new loop antenna today, and initial results are very encouraging.
It's getting dark with a thunderstorm approaching, so I ran out of time.
A version of the antenna can be seen most of the way down this page:

I bought four 10' lengths of 3/4 copper tube and four elbows. Set it into a
square and soldered seven of the eight joints. I have a tuner I made years
ago using a toroid and air variable capacitor, and an output link of a few
turns. The copper tube was slipped through the toroid, and a coax run to my
truck radio through an adapter. Tuned to a few stations and could get stuff
totally inaudible on the normal truck antenna. For example, the 640 station
near Springfield, MA was not heard on the whip. With the loop setup it was
listenable with some noise from adjacent WPRO which is a 5kw non-d local.
If I have time tomorrow, I'll do some further work. I hope to use a second
toroid and see if I can link couple to the loop with the tuner next to the
radio. I also want to put it in the clear and see how well it nulls.
We shall see!
