Consider using Linux. It now has all the functionality
anyone needs for home (using OpenOffice) and
the cost of the OS is zero for licensing, just a small
amount for the actual media on CD. Unlike MS who
wants nearly $300 for the OS license. It ain't necessary
to have to DO that any longer.

Dell has always been excellent, though they use their name to keep their
new stuff pricy. >Their refurbs (I have bought two) are great, and if

configurations that keep your money focused on your goals.

I bought a few Dell Optiplex GX-1 units at a computer
show, lacking only the hard disk, for $40 each and
you can find 10 or 20 GB hard disks at recyclng places
for about $25. I use one with a "knoppix" CD ( a bootable
Linux CD that runs entirely in RAM). These never get
viruses or worms. Save the config on a usb stick if needed.

I think he meant "Compaq" ( "com-pack" ) as Michael said.
