I checked WBBM 780's signal today around 1:00 p.m. local time. Before they
started broadcasting in the IBOC system, they had a good signal in the daytime.
The signal was just as good when they were broadcasting in C-QUAM AM Stereo.
Well, the hypothesis about IBOC reducing signal coverage is true; WBBM is now
much weaker (the second weakest Chicago 50 kW signal; only WYLL 1160 is weaker)
during the daytime. Their sidebands had no effect on local WEW on 770.
The verdict: IBOC is not only spectrally inefficient, but also cuts down on
station coverage on AM.
