Since I have been dredging up antiquities lately, I thought I would share what got me into DXing in the first place. I tuned in KEX way back when, and was amazed that I could listen to a station that far away (800 miles or so) with such clarity. I dragged my grandfather in to hear my discovery, and within two minutes he was gone...off into his dresser loaded with ancient stuff. He came back in with a ornate ragged-edged card that said he was a member of the "Keep Growing Wiser Order of the Hootowls" from KGW/Portland. It was from the 1920s. He started telling me stories of listening in the good old days, and showed me his old RCA console with the "electronic eye" tuning tube that glowed green with a good signal coming in.
The card's gone, and so is he. I still have that radio, a 1938 Philco, and a 1955 Collins R-388.
