[IRCA] Re: Goodbye 1190, 1210: WOAI IBAC

I've already lost a good sunset DX channel in 860 here; I also have lost 840 at sunset, so I can no longer hear stations with WHAS nulled on 840. I often fear what it would be like if KMOX embraced IBOC/IBAC...they could force WRYT 1080 off the air (since the IBOC/IBAC sidebands would wipe out a 500-watt daytimer 40 kHz from a 50 kW full-timer). IBOC/IBAC does not enjoy wide support from the majority of engineers; most of the broadcasters who support it are either corporate-owned (unfortunately, KMOX is one of those) or non-commercial broadcasters receiving corporate support (such as NPR and PRI, the only two networks offering centrist programming). Fortunately, I haven't heard the IBOC/IBAC sidebands of WOAI, but when WCKY 1530 has it on, it nearly wipes out KRHW 1520 (500 watts beamed right at my location) and KXEL on 1540.

With Michael Powell set to leave the FCC this month, the future of IBOC may be uncertain. It will go the way of quadraphonic sound, eight-track tapes and Kahn AM Stereo (C-QUAM is still used on over 400 stations). IBOC is a grave threat to the hobby.
