[IRCA] Re: Graveyard Blog

Curt,

Way back in the 60s when graveyard stations ran either 100 or 250 watts at night, they were as densely packed as they are now...pretty much.  They did get out though...far better than they do now.  They were very much alive, whereas now they are dead because everyone is trying to be louder than everyone else.  *I* think the term has more to do with the dense packaging.

By the way, does your nick "WWWR" stand for World Wide Wobbler Reporter?

Bob,

Interesting, I would have thought Graveyard referred to the fact those frequencies are all but dead at night, so far as useful radio listening goes. That's just what I thought of when I first heard the term used.

Perhaps an etymological explanation of the term
"graveyard" itself. My understanding of this term is that
it is an allusion to the way the stations are packed in
together geographically, across the breadth of the
country, just as headstones are arranged close together
in a cemetery.. (Visualize a station location map with
all the sites shown on it with high and relatively
uniform density).
