TRH-CO1 DXing on business trip to Colorado Springs, ICF-2010, Kiwa Pocket
Loop, Delco car radio
TRH-CO Driving around southern CO, same equipment
Domestic DX (times EDT):
-----------------------
UNIDs:
-----
960 UNID ?? UNID 5/7 0059 "9-60, K?MZ, Southern..."? then SSB and off.
(TRH-CO1)
1190 UNID ?? UNID 5/5 0241 - Vitamin infomercial, ID sounded like "KCNW
11-50 AM." Note the frequency in the slogan was 1150, not 1190. (TRH-CO1)
1270 UNID ?? UNID 5/5 0207 - Sounded like "Here on New(True?) country,
KKZZ." (TRH-CO1)
1270 UNID ?? UNID 5/5 0249 - "The #1 station for news, news 12-70."
(TRH-CO1)
1280 UNID ?? UNID 5/7 0707 - Weather forecast mentioned sunrise 6:30,
sunset 8:43, so I would guess either KS or NE. (TRH-CO1)
1290 UNID ?? UNID 5/6 0251 - "Welcome to (Kern?) Country." (TRH-CO1)
1330 UNID ?? UNID 5/7 0101 - SSB and off. (TRH-CO1)
1410 UNID ?? UNID 5/4 0029 - Ad for Don's Toyota (repair/parts).
(TRH-CO1)
1590 UNID ?? UNID 5/6 0804 - Ad for Moody Motors. (TRH-CO1)
It's odd that I heard XE anthems around 0100 ET / 0500 GMT at the beginning
of my trip, then when I monitored those channels at the end of the trip, I
got US anthems on both of these channels.
TIS and Other:
-------------
1610 UNID CO UNID - 5/1 1543 - Female announcer with tape loop mentioning
"community messages" and a local museum. Tape Loop ends with "If you missed
anything, this message will repeat." Logged from Manitou Springs, CO. I
covered quite a bit of the area to the N, S, SW, and W of Colorado Springs
by car, and had good openings to the NE, E, and SE all week, so I suspect
this station was located NW of the Colorado Springs area. (TRH-CO)
1610 WPTJ537 CO Cripple Creek - 5/1 1635 - City TIS with male announcer.
Tape loop starts with "Welcome to Cripple Creek, Colorado, the world's
greatest gold camp." (TRH-CO)
1610 Realtor CO Manitou Springs - 5/5 0940 - Talking house for a
Victorian home located at 947-A Osage St. Carolina Lutze Realtor. (TRH-CO)
1610 WPMZ421 TX Amarillo - 5/4 0622 - Station was in almost every night
with NOAA weather for Amarillo and the Texas/Oklahoma panhandle. (TRH-CO1)
The following TIS stations appear to be defunct:
530 WNVN816 Colorado Springs, CO
530 (many) (probably all Denver area HAR stations except the super
station WPLX284 which is apparently located at I-25 @ Colorado Blvd.)
530 WPKZ237 Manitou Springs, CO (sign still up on US 24 eastbound only)
530 WNVS403 Pueblo, CO
1610 WPGV452 Cripple Creek, CO (WPTJ537 is on, seems to be located in the
casino district in the 200 block of highway 67).

Daytime DX is frustrating in Colorado Springs. Several nice catches like
KFRM-KS and KGYN-OK are possible, but there are tons of mixing products
between the high-powered local stations, most of whom seem to have their
transmitters along a short stretch of I-25. At night, the low power of
KCMN-1530 and KWYD-1580 is actualy enough to make them listenable over most
of the city. Most nighttime reception is to the NE, E, and SE, which makes
sense given the Rocky mountains are just to the west.

I had two business trips to Colorado Springs with a couple of days
inbetween, so I stayed in town and did some sightseeing and DXing on my days
off. I also got a very thorough tour of Focus on the Family's headquarters
from an old schoolmate of mine who works in their engineering department.
Their facilities are by no means lavish, but they have an incredible array
of technology in their radio/TV studios, satellite control center,
warehouse, mail room, etc. They also have lots of vintage OLD RADIOS on
hand, including many on display in their lobby and main radio studio. They
actually perform the satellite uploads for a number of other programs,
including one of my favorites, "Through the Bible" with the late Dr. Vernon
McGee.
