Entertainment Network proves hot in debut trade
Entertainment Network India Ltd, the company which
operates the leading FM radio brand Radio Mirchi,
surged ahead sharply in its debut trading on
Wednesday.
The stock debuted at a price of Rs 241.60 per share on
the BSE, attracting a premium of nearly 50% over the
IPO price of Rs 162 per share, and jumped to an
intraday high of Rs 287 before closing at a price of
Rs 264.80 per share

Doordarshan, NDTV bag Commonwealth Broadcasting
Association Awards Doordarshan and NDTV are among the
winners of the prestigious Commonwealth Broadcasting
Association Awards 2006. The other awardees this year
include Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) and
Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC).
The awards, sponsored by the World Bank, Unicef and
Amnesty International, were announced on February 16
as part of the ongoing 26th Commonwealth Broadcasting
Associations General Conference in Delhi.

Dish TV to provide English movies under
video-on-demand service After launching Hindi movies
on video-on-demand, Zee under its DTH platform ? Dish
TV ? is soon going to start providing English movies
as well. Dish TV had launched its movie-on-demand
service on February 2, 2006.

Tata-Sky DTH plans to offer all channels The
much-awaited direct-to-home (DTH) service of Tata-Sky
Ltd, scheduled to be launched by the middle of the
year, is expected to offer a composite bouquet of
popular channels from almost all leading broadcasters.
The company did not believe in offering channels from
only one broadcaster, a spokesman of the Tata Sky, a
joint venture between Tatas and Rupert Murdoch's Star
TV, told PTI.

Worldspace, Tara in Bengali radio pact Worldspace
Satellite Radio has tied up with Bengali radio channel
'Tara' for the Kolkata market. Speaking at the launch
of Worldspace in Kolkata, Arti Metha, chief marketing
officer said the radio would offer more than 40
channels of digital quality programming.
The Indian programming includes two Indian classical
channels?Shruti and Gandharv. In the regional language
channels space, apart from Tara, Worldspace has tied
up with KL Radio (Tamil), Sparsha (Kannada), RM Radio
(Malayalam), Spandana (Telugu) and Tunak Punjabi
(Punjabi).

FM radio expansion not a threat: WorldSpace
Undeterred by the massive expansion lined up in FM
radio, satellite radio service provider WorldSpace,
which is investing close to 150 million dollars in the
Indian market, has chalked out new growth strategies
for the country which will see it enter new cities.
"India is the fastest-growing market for WorldSpace
globally and the demand here is quite high,"
WorldSpace chief operating officer Andy Ras work told
reporters here.

What do the opening numbers for Times Now say?
The opening numbers of Times Now are here, and with
that comes the first set of ranking of the suddenly
populated English news genre. The first week hasn?t
given the urban skewed English news channel much, but
media experts are still optimistic ? of Times Now and
the English news genre.
TAM Media Research shows that for the SEC AB 15 + in
the metros, English news channels have seen a dip in
the latest week, in comparison to the 1.3 total
channel share that the sector had in week five, in
week six, it is 1 per cent only. In the latest TAM
week, NDTV 24x7 is the clear leader with 31 per cent.
The second slot is taken by CNBC TV-18 with 19 per
cent. CNN-IBN claims a cool 18 per cent, NDTV Profit
has a 15 per cent share, Headlines Today has 8 per
cent, while Times Now is 5 per cent. BBC World and CNN
have 3 per cent and 2 per cent, respectively.

Closer interactivity
Endemol, a global leader of reality TV formats,
starts a local unit and hunts for local ideas. What is
common between popular TV shows Fame Gurukul, Kisme
Kitna Hai Dum, Night Fever or Deal Ya No Deal? They
all happen to be the intellectual properties of
Endemol, a global audiovisual entertainment company
that claims to own as many as 900 non-fiction formats.
Till recently, the Netherlands-based company was busy
licensing its formats to TV channels in India in
return for a ?format fee?; now, it plans to have the
cake and eat it too. For, the $1-billion company with
operations in 22 countries has set up its first Asian
subsidiary in India.

Sony set to launch English movie channel ?PIX? in
March-April
Kunal Dasgupta, CEO, SET India, has been expressing
the Networks? interest in venturing into other genre
for some time now. Action is already fructifying on
that front as SET is all geared to add an English
movie channel. At the time of filing this report, no
details were forthcoming from SET officials on the new
channel, except the fact that it will be called PIX,
and the official launch will be announced on February
23, 2006. The channel?s Business Head would report to
SET COO, N P Singh. Industry sources inform that
Sunder Aaron would be playing a key role in shaping
PIX.

India TV goes for a makeover, adopts a more vibrant
and colourful look from February 19 In an increasingly
competitive market, it becomes imperative for channels
to come up with new innovations to stand out among the
clutter. In one such move, India TV has gone for a
revamp from February 19. As part of the change, the
Hindi news channel looks more vibrant and colourful.
The channel has integrated the interplay of various
elements in terms of new colours, graphics and tickers
to make it more modern, interactive and youthful.
The channel has also taken steps to improvise the
presentation of its anchors. Besides, the programme
?Bhaiya Bole? has undergone a complete makeover and is
now called ?Bhai Bole?. The changes have been done by
a pool of internal talent based on the feedback from
various stakeholders, viewers and advertisers.

Reuters to pay $19 mn for 26% in Times Now
Deal includes Rs 40.36 for each of the 22.14 million
Times Global shares. Reuters will pay $19.86 million
(about Rs 89 crore) to pick up a 25.82 per cent stake
in Times Global Broadcasting Company Limited, owner of
news channel Times Now.

Quizmaster eyes Indian diaspora in US
Derek O'Brien and Associate, the company promoted by
quizmaster Derek O'Brien, intends to expand overseas
in a big way in the next two years. The company is
already operating in Muscat, Dubai, Kuwait, Doha and
Dhaka. It now plans to enter USA, Africa and some
other Asian markets.

Sony India?s 25 crore media duties up for a review.
Sony India has decided to review its Rs 25-crore
media duties. Currently the agency-of-record (AOR) on
this account is Starcom. According to sources close to
the development, three agencies have been invited to
participate in the pitch. These include Madison,
Zenith Optimedia and Insight. The sources inform that
the incumbent agency Starcom had decided to stay away
from the pitch.

FM Phase II expansion:
Initiatives afoot for an FM radio industry body by
March After enthusiastically participating in the
bidding process, some players are taking the
initiative to form an FM radio industry body, which
will work as a lobby group for this booming sector.
?A preparatory meeting of the players will be held on
March 15 and the organisation will be formed formally.
Basic rules and regulations will be laid down,
including the election procedure for the council
members. The fundamental objective of the group will
be to safeguard the interests of the industry and
become a mouthpiece for policy makers,? informed Rajiv
Mishra, Director, New Media, BAG Films, who is acting
as the coordinator for the industry body.

Zoom ropes in NDTV, Hutch for FBC India-produced
Banungi Main Miss India
Zoom TV is all set for the launch of Pond?s Banungi
Main Miss India (BMMI), a 12-episode reality series
based on the Pond?s Femina Miss India contest. The
show premieres on February 22 and will be broadcast
every Wednesday till March 17 with Pond?s as the title
sponsor of the pageant. FBC India is producing the
show, and in addition to BCCL?s support, Zoom has also
roped in NDTV Network and Hutch for promotion of the
show.

Cricket: BBC secures radio deal in India
The Britich Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) secured
exclusive radio rights for all international cricket
matches in India for the next four years. The BBC
clinched the rights from Nimbus International
Communications Ltd, bagged all the rights for next
four years from the Indian Cricket Board for a
whopping sum of USD 612 million (approx Rs 2755 crore)
