'Allow private radios to air news'	

Amidst increasing number of private radio stations and
their popularity, Prasar Bharati CEO K S Sarma on
Thursday said these stations should be allowed to
broadcast news and current affairs programmes. "The
government must allow private radio stations to
broadcast news and current affairs programmes since
radio can reach more people than any other medium," he
said.

Prasar Bharati channels may launch in US	

Prasar Bharati may launch four Doordarshan Channels
and two radio channels from the States in the United
States. According to sources, if everything goes well,
the channels will start beaming by May end this
year.The channels to be launched are DD news, DD
India, DD Bengali and DD Punjabi. The Radio channels
are FM Rainbow and FM Hindi. The tenders have been
awarded to Indians with US citizenship. Hemanth Patel
has been given the tender for DD at $ 2,00,000 as
non-refundable caution deposit and the tender for
radio to H R Shah for $ 50,000.

Sun Network to go public by mid-2006	

Sun Network, one of India's largest media companies is
planning an IPO this year, and will launch a slew of
new television and radio channels. All these plans,
even as the company's cable distribution arm could
soon be taken over by the Tamil Nadu state government.
 The Sun network which owns popular TV channels like
Sun TV, KTV and Surya will finally go public by the
middle of this year. Sun network's Sumangali is the
biggest - controlling about 85% of distribution in
Chennai and is a monopoly in smaller cities like
Trichy, Madurai and Coimbatore.

Sun TV?s South Asia FM leads fourth leg of bidding	

The Sun TV network-backed South Asia FM lead the
fourth leg of bidding for FM radio held on Friday by
bagging stations in 18 out of the 21 cities in Western
Zone at an estimated investments of over Rs 16 crore.
In all, South Asia FM has bagged 48 stations at an
estimated investment of over Rs 65 crore while Anil
Ambani backed Adlabs has bagged over 50 frequencies at
an estimated investment of over Rs 125 crore.

Radio Mirchi bags all nine frequencies	

Entertainment Network India (ENIL) ? owner of Radio
Mirchi brand ? has bagged all nine FM radio stations
it bid for in the Western sector. Listeners in
Jabalpur, Bhopal, Aurangabad, Raipur, Nasik, Kolhapur,
Vadodara, Rajkot and Panaji will soon be able to tune
in to Radio Mirchi. With this, ENIL emerged as
successful bidders in 19 cities in the second round.
The number of cities under Radio Mirchi brand is
expected to increase further as bids for the Southern
region (the last leg of the second round) is scheduled
to open next week. ENIL is already operating FM radio
stations in seven A and A+ cities ? Indore, Ahmedabad,
Mumbai, Pune, Delhi, Kolkata and Chennai.-Economic

ENIL offer subscribed 20 times more	The initial public
offering (IPO) of Entertainment Network India (ENIL),
which owns the popular Radio Mirchi FM radio network,
has been oversubscribed about 20 times. Information
available on the BSE website as of 7:30 pm on Friday
showed that investors bid for about 23.65 crore shares
versus the total offer size of 1.20 crore shares.

Phdcci wants govt to implement broadcasting code	

With the government issuing notification for allowing
100% equity in entertainment channels and 26% equity
in news channels, industry chamber Phdcci has urged it
to expedite the implementation of the broadcasting
code. This is all the more important in the light of
100% equity being allowed in private satellite
channels, the chamber remarked. Phdcci has also urged
the government to come up with the formation of a
broadcasting council to monitor entertainment channels
on the same lines as Press Council of India and Censor
Board, which control the print media and the film
industry respectively.

BCCI floats tender for FM, govt says cricket is news	

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has
floated a four-year tender for media rights to
international cricket matches in India. The tender
includes bids for private FM radio, even as news and
current affairs is not allowed in this segment.A
senior official in the information and broadcasting
(I&B) ministry told DNA: ?Cricket coverage certainly
comes under news and current affairs.? And private FM
radio stations are not permitted to broadcast news and
current affairs programmes, he added, reiterating the
government norms for radio. BCCI vice-chairman Lalit
Modi had earlier argued that cricket is entertainment
and not news.

BAG Infotainment wins 4 more radio frequencies	

BAG Infotainment, a subsidiary of B.A.G. Films Limited
Company, said that, it has won four more radio
frequencies in the penultimate round of bidding for FM
radio Phase II expansion in Western India.The
successful bids were for the circles of Jabalpur in
Madhya Pradesh and Ahmednagar, Dhule and Jalgaon in
Maharashtra Post this win B.A.G. Infotainment will
have an FM presence spread across 10 stations in seven
states, namely Bihar, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh,
Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and Punjab.

FM market flares up hopes	

With the FM radio rage set to the storm north India,
private channels are confident of breaking even in the
first year of operation. At the same time All India
Radio is gearing for rising competition in the region.
	 	Following Radio Mirchi group's successful launch in
Jallandhar, Adlabs made a foray in all major towns of
Punjab from Patiala, Amritsar, Jallandhar,Chandigarh,
Shimla and Jammu and Srinagar.

BBC to launch India online series	

The online edition of BBC's Urdu service, bbcurdu.com,
is launching an interactive programme with its
audience in three cities to discuss the current status
of the language in India. The 'India Online series'
will be launched in Delhi on February 1, 2006 and will
move on to Hyderabad engaging renowned personalities
from the Indian media, politics and the entertainment
industry, a BBC press release said on Tuesday.

English news genre battle intensifies as Times Now
launches today  	

It has finally begun. The much spoken about war in the
English news genre has commenced in full earnest with
Times Global Broadcasting (TGB) going live on
television from January 31, 2006. The channel has
ensured its space in the news for various reasons in
the past few weeks, but beginning today, the
performance war is on. As is known, Times Now is a
