[HCDX] Radio Heritage Buildings Tell Stories

Radio Heritage Buildings Tell Stories
New radio heritage documentary at RNZI

When Radio New Zealand opened its refurbished art deco design
transmitter building near Wellington recently, old radio hands had
plenty of stories to tell.

You'll hear some of them in the latest Radio Heritage Foundation
[www.radioheritage.net] documentary from Radio New Zealand
International.

Built in 1935, the Titahi Bay transmitter building housed the most
powerful mediumwave transmitter in the Southern Hemisphere, the 60kW
water cooled rig of 2YA.

A decade later, the building housed the giant 7.5kW transmitters of
fledgling Radio New Zealand, the new shortwave service.

>From building racing cars to bombs, from lightning strikes to
building the engineering expertise to spread radio and TV across the
country, listen to the first hand stories from those who worked at
the Titahi Bay complex from the early days into the 1990's.

You'll also hear how another New Zealand radio heritage site has been
saved from the bulldozers. Dating from the same era, the former 3ZB
transmitter building in Christchurch faces a bright new future, with
a local radio station planning to give the historic building a new
lease of life.

In Samoa, the colonial style wooden home of the old 2AP celebrates
nearly 60 years on the air, and now has the new SBC-FM studios giving
it an extended future.

This building though is in danger of demolition, and in urgent need
of restoration and repair as a Pacific heritage site in Apia.

The documentary is scheduled for broadcast on October 24, and is then
available in the 'more audio' section of the RNZI website
[www.rnzi.com] under the Mailbox heading.

The program is produced by the Radio Heritage Foundation
[www.radioheritage.net] in association with RNZI and continues a
series looking at radio issues around the Pacific region.

Free access stories and images about Radio New Zealand, 3ZB, 2AP Samoa
and many other Pacific radio stations can be found at
www.radioheritage.net.

The previous documentary, Radio Memories across the Pacific,
featuring WXLG, WXLE and the 1942 Mail Call show to New Guinea,
remains at www.rnzi.com for downloading. It's also in the 'more
audio' section, under the October 10 dateline.
