Re: [HCDX] Power Line Noise
I'm a 160, 80, 40 meter amateur radio operator including MARS, as well a LF,
MF Dx'er, even some SW on 120, 90 60 meters, so noise was a big problem for
me here in the swamps of central Florida. I tried a variety of solutions
including loops, flags, beverages and phasing devices like the
MFJ-1025/1026, all with varying degrees of success. Next I began studying
the local power grid installation and it's lack of maintenance and came to
realize that most of my noise came from arcing across lightning arrestors
damaged by lightning strikes. This was verified by a portable radio QRN
search by me. Then it was off to communicate the QRN problem with the
intransigent local power company, then the ARRL and even the FCC, a very
slow process laborious process. Anyway to make a long story short, the
removal of the ground wire lead from the lightning arrestors on the power
poles became the temporary solution for me, followed by replacement of the
lightning arrestors. My QRN went from +20 over S9 to S0-1 on 160.

Subject: [HCDX] Power Line Noise
> Any ideas on how to reduce power line noise..I have high tension power
lines 500 feet behind my shop where my shortwave setup is..I am running a 75
foot long wire with a plain wire lead-in..It is nuch more sensitive than the
built in antenna, but the noise on 160-80-60, and 40 meters is terrible...It
is okay on 20-15, and 10 meters..Right now the antenna is paralell to the
power lines...Any ideas....Thanks, Tom Shaw
