RE: [HCDX] EARTHWATCH
Earthwatch is actually a shareware program ($25 registration), not freeware.
An alternative is "XPLANET" which is an open source project that's available
free for many platforms (Linux, Windows, Mac, and others). Although it has
*many* features, a few things I enjoy the most are:
-ability to change high-res images used for the daylight & nighttime sides
of the earth
-automatic download and overlay of near-realtime cloud cover graphics for
the earth
-ability to display current positions of the Hubble Telescope, International
Space Station, current space shuttle flights, and nearly any other satellite
in orbit
-the display of the glow of city lights as seen from space on the night side
of the earth (Xplanet is meant to use compiled satellite photos of the
globe)
The home page of XPLANET is:
http://xplanet.sourceforge.net/
It can take some effort to learn how to use the various parameters and
setups for Xplanet, but the resulting displays are stunning, particularly on
a large graphics workstation monitor.

For a fantastic "freeware" sunrise/sunset program,
try http://www.elanware.com/ .
It's called "EARTHWATCH".
