[HCDX] Anybody who "upgraded" from HF-150 to a more expensive receiver?
I like DX-ing in general and my favorities are Latin
American stations. I am located in Western Europe, so
picking up stations in in 60m band that transmit with
only few kilowats is a challenge.
My current equipment is comprised of a Lowe HF-150
with a MFJ-1046 passive preselector and RF Systems MLB
antenna (15 m long). It works fine, and the
preselector does a good job keeping the HF-150 from
overloading. A bigger antenna won't help because even
with the current one the HF-150 overloads badly
without the preselector. But even during a "good"
night I can pick up at best a dozen domestic LA
stations at best. Obviously the big ones (RHC, RAE,
HJCB) are not a problem, but the small, "domestic"
stations are tough. I have managed to pick up in
total about 30 stations that transmit in the 1-10 kW
range, but I want more !!!
My question is to people who have upgraded from the
HF-150 to either the Icom IC-R75, the JRC NRD-545 or
the AOR 7030. How much better performance should I
expect from one of these sets vs. my HF-150? Will I
see a real difference? Will things like passband
tunning, notch filter, DSP allow me to "dig" many more
stations out of the noise?
I am very tempted to buy me a nice X-mas present, but
I would like to hear from other experienced DX-ers
before spending the money.
