IRCA will stop publishing the NewsFlash in a few issues (mid-August).
As the concept of an email newsletter for AM DXers has been proven, it
is time for me to concentrate my time on other projects (SDXM, sticker
collecting, WWI airplane modeling, etc). Thanks for the kind words that
have been expressed... it is MUCH appreciated to be appreciated.

IRCA publishes its email newsletter 35+ times/year (I edit this too!!).
You may want to consider joining the IRCA and receive its email
newsletter, the "soft" DX Monitor (SDXM). Price to the world is -
$10.00/year. Send to: IRCA HQ, PO Box 1831, Perris CA 92572-1831

6/29. Today I read in the newspaper that on the 4th of july the new
station Radio 192 will start transmissions on 1332 khz. The name Radio
192 reminds of the former Radio Veronica which used 192 meters
mediumwave (1562 khz). The programmes will be hosted by former Radio
Veronica DJ's. The target area of the station is the western part of the
Netherlands and beyond. Power: unknown.

The New York Radio Message Board is buzzing about the format change at
WWKB 1520 in Buffalo. Apparently, they are ditching their business
format and adopting a 70's pop format at 3 p.m. this afternoon. They
will also be carrying Joey Reynolds overnights.
I am sure that I am not the only one on this list who has fond
memories of the old WKBW with their top 40 format. Their 50kw signal at
night was better than any of the Hartford 5kw top 40 stations (WDRC-1360
+ WPOP-1410) once the sun went down. I believe they beam out east to
protect Oklahoma City.
I used to get a kick listening to KB during Buffalo's many snow
emergencies during the 70's. They would broadcast no school
announcements during late afternoon drive time for the following day!
  http://www.buffalonews.com/editorial/20010629/1006086.asp

I should of included the URL of the New York Radio Message Board in
my WWKB post. It is http://www.musicradio77.com/wwwboard/
Although it is primarily a New York City message board, it includes
topics of national and international interests. It is one of the best!
The NYRMB is part of the WABC Musicradio 77 tribute site.

4TAB Maryborough Qld commenced its service for the Maryborough and
Harvey Bay region on 26/6/01 at a frequency of 1161 khz. This ends the
4MB use of the frequency since they moved to FM at 103.5mhz. 4MB had
been running a loop announcement on 1161 about their move since early
May. 4TAB 1161khz is in // with Brisbane 1008khz as well as 4TAB
Townsville 891khz and Darwin 1242khz.

Two items re 1640 TIS in Fla...
  1. I was in New Smyrna Beach yesterday (actually also at Apollo Beach)
and the 1640 TIS there was not heard during several checks, both day and
evening. This TIS was heard by me in Tampa several times around sunset a
few months ago. Don't know if temporarily or permanently off.
  2. There is a new one testing in Orlando on 1640. three voice loops in
sequence, with gaps between, and audio from NWS WX station KIH-63
162.475 Orlando used as fill between loops. Never gave a callsign, just
Highway Advisory...radio 1640" etc. Announced as being where I-4 and Fla
turnpike cross. Local like strength on John Young Pkwy ( is near I-4
exit 32 (near the Fla Tpke)) down to JYP at exit 28, still readable at
exit 27 (Epcot) and finally in the mud at exit 26 (near Kissimmee) so
this one has good range, and modulation is very good. Hrd at 2130 local
time.
I doubt there is any connection betwen Smyrna off and this one on, as
the separation is an hour's driving time. But with 1640 being so open in
the East at night, this new one may get out well.

Yesterday I reported on a new HAR TIS in Orlando FL on 1640. Terry
Krueger advises this has been testing for about three months and is
shown on his "flortis" list. So apparently this station has been running
the same test since April, according to one of his local informants.
Since I'll be going to Orlando semi-frequently now (beginning 2 weeks
ago) I'll monitor this situation more closely.
I wonder how useful this thing will be if it takes this long to
program it. Perhaps the WTIR people are running it :-)

POLAND
Radio Racja (Bialystok/Warszawa) is considering to use the TPSA
transmitter at Koszecin (near Czestochowa) on 1080 kHz for its
programmes to Belarus. First tests were made during May, and the
reception in Belarus proved to be good. The site has a 750 kW TESLA
transmitter, but there is no definite decision yet about the use nor
about the final configuration of the installation for this case. (Bernd

our fellow list member (who was with WTBN) involved with the new station
on 1470?

1660 KAXW CA Merced. SS music and dual KRAN quince-ochenta - KAXW
(freq. not readable) noted 7/11 0201, not great but easily
topping KXOL, which has been poor for about a week. First night
       on, I believe (PT-WA)

ART BLAIR - artblairca@xxxxxxxxxxx

1660-KAXW logged July 11 at 0550-0605 PDT.

*kevin redding - amfmtvdx@xxxxxxxxx

This is who I was hearing last night in SS just slightly lower than
KXOL! They are not blasting here in Mesa, at least not last night.

*Pat Martin - mwdxer@xxxxxxxxx

1660 KAXW CA, Merced, is now on the air running JRN's SS format
//1580, IDs for both on the hour. Great signal at 2300 EDT 7/11.

*Dennis Gibson - dcgibson@xxxxxxxxxxxxx

Presumed KAXW (SS) good on 1995 Saturn car radio at 0110 7/12. No sign
of KXOL. Here in Santa Barbara the weakest California expanded band
station is KAZT-1670, which also seems a little low in the modulation
department. My only other decent radio that covers the expanded band (GE
Superadio III) is at my new digs.

***Terry Palmersheim - krhimer@xxxxxxxx

KAXW being heard here in Helena, MT at almost the same strength as
KXOL!! Finally, somebody else can be heard on the frequency here in the
the west.

*Albert Lehr - ALehr@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx

KAXW-1660 Merced, "La Rancherita" is strong here in the daytime, and
last night they completely eliminated KXOL. Their TOH ID at 1000:30 PLT
today was in Spanish only. They are running 21.1 to 21.8 Hz high and
varying from moment to moment. Brand new and already at least two FCC
violations.

*Charles Boehnke - ccb@xxxxxxxx

KAXW 1660 Merced, Radio Rancherita, was loud and clear last night,
well over any QRM, totally dominate with S9+20 db signal. Best X-Bander
yet heard here in Hawaii.

Taken from Downstate Illinois Radio Board (www.statesradio.com):
Terre Haute, IN - Expect the three stations owned by Contemporary
Media - 107.5/WZZQ ("Z107-5" Modern AC), 960/WBOW (Classic Country/Jones
satellite), and 1230/WBUZ (// WZZQ) - to go dark in the very near
future. Contemporary Media owner Mike Rice was convicted in July 1994 of
child sexual abuse, and as a felon, is having his licenses revoked by
the FCC.
I imagine the 960/WBOW really means the 640 station.

1700 (WNSB415) CA San Diego - Correcting last month's tip: Although the
"Before entering Mexico, tune to AM 1610" signs have all been
changed to 1700, it is actually WNSB415 (CA-905 at Beyer Blvd.,
ex-530kHz) that is moving here. It looks like the scratchy pest
on 1610 is going to stay on the air for no apparent reason.
Maybe Gary Jackson can contact CalTrans and ask them if they know
they left this one on? :) So the 530 station (which existed for
years with no signs) is still silent, the 1610 station (which is
active) has no signs, and the 1700 station (which has at least a
dozen signs now) is not on the air yet! This is typical for
TIS/HAR stations in my neck of the woods (the 1700 kHz station at
Qualcomm station is still providing information about sporting
events from last November, and paying top dollar for the
electricity to do it! Ditto for 1610 Chula Vista, running dead
       air since last fall). (TRH-CA)

with fair signal. There were some QRM from a Middle East station and

Tonight july 10th was a great night for African DX on Mw:

1386 2102-2106 UTC KBC Kenya with E prayer, sort of religious chanting
(christian) and S/Off at 2106/2107. The signal was stronger than
co/ch Iran., last night July 9th I heard KBC too but Iran was
       stronger last night!!
1386 2145-2202 Europop (Rod Stewart with You are in my heart) and afro-
popmusic with female vocals just after 2200, most probably Radio
Rurale, Guinea, they have been reported with europops before!!
1395 2150-2200-- UNID: signal coming from south!! male talk and male
chants in kind of Islamic-Afro style, the kind of mumbled vocals
you hear on stations from the Sahel like R Niger or Mali, after
2200 I heard male talk but coming from an other direction
(southeast/east) Anyone an idea about africans on 1395???

Due to the lack of any sporadic-E openings on FM and TV in the past
two weeks, I tuned my radio to AM, and SURPRISE !!!
It`s the first time this summer, I really hear any stuff from Latin
America on the broadcast band. The last evening on 0308 UTC,
Turks&Caicos - 530 was strong, and bits of woman spanish talk from YVKS
(Caracas, VEN) were noted on 750, under WSB. I think this indicates that
the 2001-2002 DX season will come in verry fast. Here are the logs. I
hope they will make the next IDXD issue. All heard on a Sanyo portable,
with it`s own antenna (a pretty long internal antenna, as it allowed me
to pull a lot of hard-to-hear Latins the past DX season):

530 TURKS AND CAICOS ISLANDS. Radio Vision Cristiana, Grand Turk, JUL
10 0308 - man preaching in spanish. Loud signal, despite some
       static scratches. (Chiochiu-PQ)
750 VENEZUELA. YVKS Radio Caracas Radio, Caracas, JUL 10 0310 - bits
of woman talk in spanish, heard throught WSB. (Chiochiu-PQ).

  7/11. Angola is booming here on 1502 (21.05 till now),modulation it's
quite bad but the overall signal level is about 3+ (1/5). I believe it's
a National Radio Relay via the EP do Benguela TX.

 HELP WITH...

Two things heard this morning on 1690 in WPTX's absence:

1690 UNID 6/28 0155-0210 HAR running a 30-second loop, snippets
audible at times but over multiple iterations, the gist is "...
Department of Transportation Highway Advisory Radio WQGE256 (??)
16-90 on your AM dial. When fully operational, you will receive
timely traffic advisory and safety ... Please drive carefully and
wear your seatbelt." Male announcer, and on the long "a"s
(operational, wear) there is a definite Boston accent. No
remotely similar calls (and no Mass. stations) on FCC TIS
       website.
1690 UNID 6/28 0155-0210 Spanish station with lively music, occasional
talk by man. A couple shouts of a three-syllable word (the
cadence is "ex-TEN-sa," but that's not the word) around 0201 that
       could have been an ID.

Heard last night on 1690 with Maryland off:

unID 06/27 2020-2359 - WQO 256 Highway Advisory Radio; repeating
announcement by a man ending "...and wear your seatbelt." (BC-NH)
unID 06/27 2020-2359 - Mix of tropical/Caribbean music including soca,
calypso, and steel drum with French and English vocals. (BC-NH)

R8B, MWDX-5, 100-ft wire, 100-ft east sloping wire.

**Barry McLarnon - bm@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

I did some recording on 1690 last night, and the wee hours featured
two stations peaking barely above the noise level. The first had music,
some of it tropical-sounding, with vocals in a language that I couldn't
quite make out. The second had a man talking in english - clearly a
TIS, as I was able to discern the odd word such as "advisory" and
"operations". During a bit of a fadeup around 0400, I was able to hear
the WQO256 call letters several times, so this was the same HAR station
that Bruce reported. Anybody have a location on this one?

Heard 1700 kHz station while driving in Dorchester (Boston) tonight
(6/28 local, or 6/29 UTC) at 8:57pm-9:17pm (0057-0117 UTC). Station
IDing as "Rah-dee-oh Bell Ay-ee-tee", which my wife says is pure French
(not Haitian-Creole) for "Beautiful Haiti Radio" (Radio Belle Haiti).
One sure way to know if you're listening to this same station is they
keep playing the "Mission Impossible" TV series theme music between
announcers.
Heard news about polio vaccine at 8:57pm. Then ad/PSA for Bible Study
group in Malden on Monday and Wednesday, 6-9pm, and Saturday 9am-noon.
Then had commercial for a store/salon in Hyde Park (also part of
Boston). Then had international news in French at 9pm (0100 UTC).
Stories included drug traffic/zero tolerance, Serbia, Isreali/
Palestinian peace accord, Yugoslav/Milosevic/war crimes tribunal,
comments by Bush and Chirac, etc. Commercial for Las Vegas Seafood
Restaurant in Hyde Park at 9:15pm in both English and French. Another ID
as possible "Radio Belle Haiti" at 9:17pm.
So Radio Belle Haiti may be the name of the station or the program
they were running. I don't know. But I'll keep listening.

Anybody out there, who can tell if the swedish RSL-station WFÄX will
be operating again this year? The page www.farila.nu lists programmes
for 1602 kHz, the event takes place between 7th and 15th of July. But as
I haven't seen any info on the DX-scene I don't know, if that's true or
not. Tried to catch them last year, but due to lousy conditions I
couldn't get them. So any information is highly appreciated.

***Ronny Forslund - info@xxxxxxxxx

Yes, WFÄX - "the Barn Radio" will be active this year from the same
location as last time. We are still using the same 50 W transmitter as
last year but this time we will try another antenna construction of a
vertical type and hopefully, it should give our signal a better boost.
The first test transmissions will go on the air on July 5 and at 22.00
UTC on this day we will be running a DX test for a couple of hours. The
transmitter will be on the air 24 hours a day, with programmes and music
mixes provided by Radio Ljusdal. Reception reports may be sent to this
address:

WFÄX The Barn Radio
Box 44
SE-82041 Färila
Sweden

Further info will be published continously on www.farila.nu For our
QSL, please include an IRC or some other form of return postage with
your report. Welcome to tune in - and we hope that many of you will be
able to hear us this year.

****Lars Hedberg - lhu@xxxxxxxxxxxxx

WFÄX was heard at 0012 in Uppsala on 1602. They use 55 watt. I hade
some problems with Italy and others had problems with Spain at the same
qrg, but Färila dominated sometimes. They will continue to transmit this
weekend. Also Radio Hami from Finland can be heard on 1584.

***Ronny Forslund - info@xxxxxxxxx

WFÄX - "The Barn Radio" - from Färila in the proviunce of Hälsingland,
Sweden, is now using a new top-loaded vertical antenna on 1602 kHz and
we hope our signal is reaching out better now. The station is on the air
24 hrs a day with a power output of around 55 W. Further information
will be published continously on www.farila.nu
We intend to run a couple of DX tests during the coming week and if
you have any DX loggings, musical requests or whatever you are welcome
to mail us at wfaxradio@xxxxxxxxxxx Phone no. to the studio is +46 651
15519 and fax +46 651 16946.

7/6. this morning I heard an UNID station on 1502 kHz. Some time ago
Christoph Mayer reported it as tentative Angola. I heard it at 0301-
0303 UTC with a man reading news .... weak signal, maybe it was in
Portuguese? Then the station faded out and did not come back with a
readible quality anymore. It was just after our local Sunrise and
conditions were getting worse...

  2. CKNX was loud tonight, didn't theu have a // on 930 at one point?
  3. Just how messed up IS the WKNR-850 pattern? They were bombing in

1. Latest IDXD says Ciego de Avila 10 kW, La Jaiba 1 kW, Santiago de
Cuba 1 kW
3. They're more noticeable here in D.C. than WRMR was. But then I
always found that WRMR didn't ID very much, and NOS on 850 often turned
out instead to be WYLF, which gets out extremely well even if they're
running day power 24 hours (which I think they did even when they were
an official daytimer).

I've noticed them on too... they are running syndicated "The Light"

I just checked Bennett Bros. web site and they do still show the GE
Superadio III for $39.50 + shipping. I've managed to log a number of X-
banders just fooling around with it. Will be retired in 2 months and
plan to do much (or is that mucho?) dxing this winter. I have not done
any for a few years due to work taking too much time. Just been lurking
during this period of time. Gone are the days when 1040-WHO signed off
every SM. Gave me a chance to log Hawaii on 1040. Speaking of 580-KMJ,
it was not uncommon to log them here in MN back when I was dxing. I
suppose now that they have increased power, I'll never log them again.

Anyone know if the Radio Shack DX-160 is any good for dxing? I bought
one new back when they were being sold by RS. It is still in the
original box. I only took it out once just to make sure it was
operational. Then I purchased a McKay Dymek DR-22 and the DX-160 never
got used. Now that I will have time, I thought I would take it out and
try it.

*Rick Kenneally - Wilton CT - woodlandview@xxxxxxxxx

The DX-160 was my main AM DX set back in the early 80s whenever my HQ-
180 was non-functional. It has decent selectivity and sensitivity,
though you'll want an amplified loop or a good longwire. Dynamic range
is limited, but not terrible - it can handle stronger signals than many
of today's digital portables. The dial doesn't have the greatest
resolution on AM, so you might consider taping a strip of white paper
over the AM portion and making better dial markings with a fine pen or
pencil. I don't recall any particular quirks - it was good value for
the money in its day.
I recently unpacked my old DX-160, which has been in a basement for
almost 20 years. The reception and audio were still good, but the
volume knob is terribly scratchy. You may find the same with yours.
Note, if your set is still in its original box and is cosmetically
perfect, you can command over $100 on ebay for it. They seem to sell
pretty well when in like-new condition (particularly if you have the
matching speaker).

WOW! Thats one old unit and to have it be a virgin is something else.
I would love to know how it works for you. I am sure there are better

that.

I have a DX150B (which if I recall correctly was the DX160 minus
longwave?). It was a very nice DX receiver and my main rig from 1976-
1985, for SW, AM and ham operation. I had several TP loggings on it on
AM. I need to reconnect the internal loop antenna and fire it up again
(I got a bum steer from an old radio club technical manual some years
ago. The thing has virtually no lead-in and is very difficult to re-
connect once disconnected).

After 20 years of having my old trusty EWE antenna up, which netted me
everything from Cook Islands-630 to Nepal-792/576 and India-864, it came
down a few days ago.
Unfortunately my neighbor decided to place an electric fence in the
way so it would be hard to get get to the far end to adjust the pot for
termination. The fence has been in place for the past 2 years.
The wire came loose from the termination earlier this year I believe
and later broke loose. I pulled it the rest of the way in and I have
been trying to find another spot to put the EWE antenna. The way the
land is situated, it is not possible to get exactly the same angle as
before, but I can get close. The wire ran to the NE and came down the
trunk of the tree were the termination was. I put up a new EWE and ran
it over some branches and over to a high branch that sticks out a ways
and then down the branch and straight to the ground to a termination
point.
I was disappointed with the results at first. I had forgotten that 75%
or more of the DX effect along the Oregon coast has to do with a good
ground. The wire is important, but putting in lots of grounding at the
termination point and also at the matching transformer makes all the
difference in the world.
I now have 4 ground rods at both places connected together with bare
#14 copper wire. The nulls have improved alot, but they are not the same
as before. I now get a null, fairly sharp when adjusting the 5K ohm pot
to the SE (Portland OR stations). The oldnull to the NE (Seattle WA
stations) is not nearly as sharp as before. This is during the day when
you can get groundwave conditions with no fading.
Since I am off maybe 10 degrees from my old EWE and the wire angle is
a bit difference and is also 10-15 longer than before, I guess getting
the same results would not be possible.
The antenna has been OK as I am hearing several Hawaiians, Tahiti, &
Tonga on the antenna. I guess if the wire has a certain null to the SE
or NE, does not matter with DX to the Pacific.
The other EWE I was so used to, that getting used to a new one is a
bit hard. At least the EWE works!

Phasing Improves Kaz Antenna Nulls
(Mark Connelly, WA1ION - 10 JUL 2001)

The "Kaz" antenna was introduced by John Bryant's article "Testing Two
'Kaz' Squashed Delta Antennas" (reference 1). Further test results were
presented in my article "Pennant and Kaz Antenna Tests" (reference 2).
The antenna has the form of a delta with the apex spaced above the
center of the horizontal base at a distance of 1/4 to 1/3 the length of
the base. Base height above ground can be as little as 0.3 m / 1 ft.,
though I find improved performance at 1.5 m or higher. The top wire
(forming the two sloping sides) is one conductor and the base wire is a
second conductor. Feeding and/or termination occurs at the pair of
wires on each end of the base at the point of approach of the upper
conductor.
This article describes how the nulling abilities of the Kaz antenna
can be enhanced by having combination feed and termination boxes
installed at each end of the antenna. The two coaxial feedlines are
presented to inputs of a phasing unit.
Homebrew phasers such as DXP-2, DXP-3, Superphaser-1, and Superphaser-
2 work well for this application. Articles on these units can be
obtained via links on my RF Circuits page (reference 3). Commercially-
available broadband phasing units such as the Quantum Phaser, modified
MFJ-1026, and JPS ANC-4 could also be used.
Each feedline supplies a pickup that is somewhat cardioid in shape.
If the Kaz antenna is set up on an east-west axis, the feedline coming
from the box at the west end of the antenna has a pattern which, to some
extent, nulls signals from the east (+/- 30 degrees typical). The
feedline coming from the box at the east end of the antenna has a
pattern that tends to null signals from the west. Depending on antenna
layout, height, surrounding conductive objects, and termination
resistance, the maximum null of each cardioid can vary from as little as
about 6 dB to as much as 40 dB. In many cases Vactrol control of
termination can improve null depth over what can be had with a fixed
termination value (typically chosen to be about 1000 +/- 200 ohms).
Even if the terminations are fixed and cardioid front-to-backs are only
coming in around 10 dB each, very deep nulls can still be obtained by
phasing the two opposing direction cardioids against each other.
In the case of wanting to null a signal from the west with the above
set-up, the feedline from the west end of the antenna may be presented
to phasing unit Channel 1 and the feedline from the east end to Channel
2. Channel 1 has a western station signal about 10 (and maybe more) dB
stronger than that same signal on Channel 2. Also, desired eastern
signals are on the order of 10 dB or more weaker on Channel 1 than on
Channel 2. When equalizing Channel 1's western pickup to be about equal
with that from Channel 2, the level pot adjustment introduces about 10
dB of loss on Channel 1. At this point there is at least 20 dB of
strength difference between the two channels on eastern signals. When
the phase adjustment to null the western signal is enacted, there is
virtually no effect on eastern signals even if they too are made to be
180 degrees out of phase between the two channels. The system's overall
front-to-back ratio can be pushed to better than 50 dB on groundwave and
25 dB on most skip with this arrangement: superior to a single feedline
approach even with Vactrol control.
The simplest way to do a combination feed and terminate at each end of
the antenna is to connect the antenna wires through a step-down
transformer matching 950 ohms to 50 ohms. John Bryant's article
"Fabricating Impedance Transformers for Receiving Antennas" (reference
4) recommends an FT114-75 (FT114-J) Amidon ferrite toroidal core with a
20-turn high-impedance primary winding (antenna) and a 5-turn low-
impedance secondary winding (coaxial feed). He also mentions the
alternative of an FT114-43 core with a 45-turn high-impedance primary
and a 10-turn low-impedance secondary. A Mini-Circuits T16-6T-X65
transformer has also been used successfully in some Kaz and Pennant
antenna installations. If the "shack end" cable terminations (e.g. at
the two phasing unit inputs) are reasonably close to 50 ohms, the
correct termination impedance for each side of the antenna will be
passed through the respective transformer (acting as a step-up in that
direction).
Because adjustment of a deep null is accomplished by phasing, there is
less need for Vactrol remote termination than with a single-feedline
system. Two opposing cardioids of fairly mediocre null depth can be
combined to produce impressive front-to-back ratios. This is quite the
same as noted here with opposing-pickup slopers even when each antenna
is only good for about 8 - 10 dB of front-to-back on its own. Also, as
noted with slopers, a bit of spatial separation helps too. Phase shift
on desired signals is less likely to be in the 180 degree null range
executed on opposite-direction signals when feedpoints are separated by
1/15 to 1/3 wavelength (as compared to being co-located or at some
multiple of 1/2 wavelength). As compared to a small 12 m base version,
the larger size Kaz antennas (base in the 20 - 40 m / 65 - 130 ft.
range) will deliver heftier signals in the first place and will also
have the added benefit of a lower likelihood of collateral nulling of
desired-direction signals along with null-direction "pests" when
inherent cardioid null depths are below the ideal of at least 12 dB
each.
The transformer feed / terminate scheme without additional
amplification is usually adequate for Kaz antennas having areas of 100
square meters or above (e.g. base 20 m, apex 5 m above base). Smaller
antennas can benefit from amplification. Since coaxial cable has very
little loss below 2 MHz, MW DXers and 160-m hams will usually have a 50-
ohm input / output amplifier on each coaxial feedine at the "shack" end,
out of the weather. The W7IUV design (reference 5) is a good choice.
The Kiwa broadband amplifier and the Mini-Circuits model ZHL-6A are
ready-made, though pricey, options.
There is one instance in which amplification located at the two
antenna feed points may be desired. This is the circumstance when
Vactrol control of termination resistance is desired. Because DC
(typically 12 volts) to power an amplifier and a separate Vactrol DC
voltage both must be presented to each of the two combination feed /
terminate boxes, a single wire (carrying Vactrol DC) must accompany the
coaxial feed than carries DC to and RF from the amplifier at a given end
of the antenna. This separate wire should be broken up with several RF
chokes to keep it from influencing the antenna. It can be physically
attached to its accompanying coaxial line by means of nylon cable ties.
The amplifier should be a high-impedance input to 50-ohm output buffer
type. My BUF-E and BUF-F models (links via reference 3) work well here.
The Vactrol's variable resistance can be placed from the input of the
buffer amplifier card on one side and, on the other side, to a 220 ohm
resistor to circuit ground. The two antenna leads go to the primary of
a custom 1:1 high-impedance transformer (to be described); the secondary
of this transformer goes to the buffer amplifier card input and to
circuit ground. This arrangement gives about 15 dB of gain compared to
no amplifier; it also enables simultaneous Vactrol control of the null
observed when the phasing unit is set to the channel corresponding to
the output of the amplifier on the opposite side of the antenna. The
custom 1000 ohm 1:1 balun transformer consists either of 21 turns
primary / 21 turns secondary on an FT114-75 (FT114-J) core or,
alternately, 45 turns primary / 45 turns secondary on an FT114-43 core.
The Vactrol controller should be a dual version incorporating aspects
of the model presented in Figure 3 of my article "Pennant Antenna with
Remote Termination Control" (reference 6). Chokes, dropping resistors,
and diode protection of the LED portion of the Vactrol (in each feed /
terminate box) should be configured similarly to Figure 5 of the Pennant
article.
Having the independent Vactrol controls and "field site" buffer
amplifiers at each end of the antenna adds a good deal of complexity
compared to the simple transformer-feed method, but it is seen as a
valuable approach to take on smaller Kaz antennas like the 10 X 40 ft. /
3 X 12 m model that is becoming popular for temporary installations.
You could use the buffer amplifiers without the Vactrol if desired.
In that case you'd install a 1K fixed resistor or, better yet, a 2K pot
across the input of each buffer. During installation each end's pot
could be tweaked to null a target station in the middle of the frequency
range. You'd "listen" to the output of the amplifier opposite the one
where you were adjusting the pot. An adjusted value of 800 ohms to 1.2K
would be the typical result.
Phasing is achieved by observing the normal operating procedure for
the unit being used. This generally consists of, first, equalizing the
amplitudes of Channel 1 and Channel 2 on the signal to be nulled and,
secondly, adjusting the phase shift control to produce a null. The
procedure concludes with small interactive adjustments of one or both
amplitude pots and the phase shifter.
If feedline pickup is a problem, one or more coaxial chokes
(consisting of 17 turns of RG-174 on an FT140A-J core) may be inserted
in series with the coaxial line.
Anyone contemplating the use of a Kaz, Pennant, Flag, or Delta
terminated loop should look into two-feedlines-to-phaser schemes similar
to those outlined above. The enhanced nulling performance makes the
slightly greater system complexity well worth the effort.

1970. Play time on the disc is about 60 minutes and it is ©1998.
The first track has the following ID (not in Wolfman's voice) - "This
is 50,000 watt clear channel XERB, Radio North America, central studios
in Los Angeles, ten ninety on your dial." There is also an offical
sounding dual language English / Spanish ID on one of the tracks.
This is the era when I was in high school back in rural northern IL.
In '65 and '66 I listened to the Wolfman on XERF with a Hallicrafters S-

moved to XERB which I think was about '67. But I never could hear XERB
because of "The Mighty Ten Ninety, KAAY, Little Rock" which boomed into
IL at night. So it was a real treat for me to hear these XERB air

Harvey to have surgery on weakened vocal cord
  July 11, 2001
  BY ROBERT FEDER, SUN-TIMES COLUMNIST
An uncharacteristically speechless Paul Harvey, who has been off the
air for more than a month with what was thought to be laryngitis, will
undergo surgery to repair a weakened vocal cord.
Chris Berry, vice president of ABC News Radio, said Tuesday that the
Chicago-based commentator will undergo the outpatient procedure later
this month at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn.
''Then it's going to be several weeks after that before he is back on
the air,'' said Berry, who described Harvey's voice as sounding ''a
little thin.''
During an examination at the clinic last week, doctors diagnosed the
vocal cord problem, which they attributed to a virus Harvey caught last
May, Berry said.
Harvey, 82, made headlines last November when he signed a 10-year,
$100 million contract with ABC Radio Networks. He has been a top star on
the network for 50 years and is widely considered to be the most
listened-to voice on radio.
In a written message to his anxious affiliates last month, Harvey
sought to reassure them and his legion of fans that he would be back
behind the microphone soon.
''I know it must seem that I have neglected my 'professional family'
in recent weeks,'' he wrote. ''The fact is that I've imagined that every
'next week' I would be back on your frequency broadcasting as usual, but
this bug is tenacious!
''The good news is that the voice is returning gradually. The bad news
is that it is not yet the broadcast quality which ABC affiliates
deserve. Also, I'm told that to stress the voice prematurely could
prolong the hoarseness.
''I am indeed sorry this uncertainty has dragged on so long, but the
worst is past. The healing has begun. God willing, it won't be long
now,'' he wrote.
While resting his vocal cords, Harvey has been dividing his time
between his mansions in west suburban River Forest and Arizona, playing
golf and writing.
In his absence, a series of high-profile substitutes have filled in
for him, including ABC News correspondent Sam Donaldson. In Chicago,
Harvey's daily news commentaries and ''The Rest of the Story'' features
air on WGN-AM (720).
