I will stop publishing the NewsFlash in a few months (by September). As
the concept of an email newsletter for AM DXers has been proven, it is
time for me to concentrate my time on other projects (SDXM, sticker
collecting, WWI airplane modeling, etc).
IRCA publishes its email newsletter 35+ times/year (I edit this too!!).
You may want to consider joining the IRCA and receive its email
newsletter, the "soft" DX Monitor (SDXM). Price to the world is -
$10.00/year. Send to: IRCA HQ, PO Box 1831, Perris CA 92572-1831

RUSSIA * * * Orenburg (a.o. 1395 kHz) is not located in Siberia as
listed (S). Oreburg is located west of South Ural mountain range.
Transmitter Buguruslan is placed even more westerly, in north-west part
of Orenburg oblast (region).
To get to Siberia from Orenburg we have to cross South Ural to the
east and after some 500 km we get to West Siberia Plane (or however it
is called in English).
Orenburg Oblast Radio is on 1395 kHz. After sign on at 2300 UTC it
relays Radio Rossiyi until 2400 and then a local morning program called
"Radiobudilnik" (= Radio Alarm Clock).

San Diego State University's radio station "KCR" AM 1620 is back on
the air, getting clobbered by XEUT-1630. Our other local on 1620
(WPJP551 at the convention center) moved to 1660 some time ago but none
of the signs have been changed yet...

Yes!! WCCC-1290 is off frequency. On my Sony 2010 it appears to be
.2 kilohertz off. In the synch mode using the manual tuning knob, I get
the lower sideband at 1289.5 and the upper sideband at 1289.6. In
comparison, WTIC-1080 is in lower sideband at 1079.7 and upper sideband
at 1079.8. Also WFAN switches from lower to upper sideband between
659.7 and 659.8.

We have a new AM target here in town. The first test of the US 60 HAR

I heard an UNID Arabic speaking station on 1566 kHz at 1950 UTC (JUN

Iraqi dayi..." Strong in peaks, deep fade outs. Needs more monitoring.

540 CBXQ CANADA, Ucluelet, B.C. Still a regulat all day long on the
coast after 30 years of hearing this 40 watt LPRT. Still runs
about S-5 days //690. Being 250 miles from CBXQ, it is surprising
how well this LPRT does get out, At 1450 EDT 6/12 I remember
hearing this on the car radio driving South along the coast to
the CA border in 1970 and we lost it about Crescent City, CA.
Unbelieveable. (PM-OR)
670 KDLG AK, Dillingham, heard mixing and on top of KBOI with old
rock, (Lay Down, Candles in the Rain), by Melanie and (Take the

never heard in Summer. (PM-OR)
1260 CBPU CANADA, Pacific Rim Park, BC (Near Ucluelet), at 25 or 50
watts, this one is much weaker than CBQX-540, mostly buried

phasing out KCYX with non stop weather info for Vancouver Island.

I checked KMJ just a few minutes ago (9:25 am local), comparing it
with KSFO. On the signal strength meter of the Grundig 3400 Satellit,
KMJ is weaker than KSFO but it "sounds" about the same as before. If I
had known they were changing to 50kW this quickly, I would have made a
before and after comparo. Looking at FCC data, it sure looks like I'm
in a major null!
I think KMJ dropped Dr Laura; noticed on the website they have someone
on named Bill Manders.

"It appears that somebody is transmitting test tones on 1690 (kHz)

I was hearing SS? music and talk under and over sports talk last night
at 8:55 EDT. I do not have a current X band list, but my list from last
year shows only Maryland and Colorado on 1690. Could it have been
Colorado?
**Neil Kazaross - neilkaz@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
Colorado is R. Disney .. new in Roseville CA KSXX uses SS sometimes as
well as CC and maybe some other languages. It sometimes comes thru here
in IL. But from the time you heard this, you would not have been close
to a darkness path to CO or CA. What I think you had was one of the many
X band ethnic pirates in Mass. Several seem to be aroud the Lawrence
area. Local members could fill you in much better and specifics.

Based on a tip someone posted here (sorry, I don't recall who), I
rolled tape on 1690 last night. Around 10:05PM Eastern, a station

Maryland picked up steam and the SS station became background noise.
I'll try again tonight, but you might want to give a listen.

Does anyone have any idea who I am hearing on 710 khz at 0430 EDT 6/11
running Art Bell program // with KEX-1190, Hrd a Ford spot, also several
mentions of "710" Off Eastern Beverage, tearing up KIRO at times, then
fading down. At 0400 it sounded like ABC News, during a bit of KIRO dead
air. North Dakota? Maybe they forgot to drop power? KCMO? I don't think
KCMO is ABC though? WOR is not listed as an Art Bell station. Any help
would be appreciated. KIRO is not easy to phase here with
skip/groundwave fading at 120 air miles and about 86 KW in my direction.
*Bruce Portzer - bportzer@xxxxxxxx
Art's web site http://www.artbell.com has a station list. You have to
click on one state at a time to find the affiliates in each state. I
checked a few and found some possible candidates: KGNC Amarillo, KCMO
Kansas City, KXMR Bismarck, KEEL Shreveport, and probably a bunch more
on 710. Good luck figuring out who it was.

RADIO/ANTENNA TOPICS
*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-
**Rick Kunath - k9ao@xxxxxxxxxx
Another radio that you might want to look at is the AOR AR7030 Plus
with the noise blanker/notch board installed. I have had a 2010 for
years, an NRD-545, the 7030, and a variety of tube communications
receivers. The 7030 is my current favorite. Some have complained about
the menu system to use the radio, but I actually like it. It is
intuitive and easy once you use the radio for a bit. And the radio has a
remote control that can operate most settings. You do need to use the
remote for direct frequency entry, but I find myself leaning back in the
chair more these days because of it. .Also, the radio is quite compact.
The 545 has everything pretty much on the front panel, but except for
utility shortwave stations, DSP is not quite ready for prime time, in my
opinion. I have used these on large wire and large tuned loop antennas;
as for loops the 2010 is not satisfactory because of its internal
ferrite rod antenna. This is always active. There have been several mods
to couple external antennas to the radio, but I have found that the
external ferrite rod next to the internal one works best. Because the
internal antenna is never off, nulling is a problem if you want to use a
big tuned loop. The dynamic range on the 2010 with large antennas is not
up to the standards of more expensive radios. Still, it turns in an
amazing performance, even today. I have had mine since 1987. Anyway...
my current favorite is the 7030. I have played with the Drake, but not
in a DX setting. So I can't compare the two. I often use the 7030 with a
software spectrum analyzer/digital filtering program called SR-5 and
take the output from my laptop. The graphical display allows quite a bit
of digital filtering to be used to clean up signals. The audio output of
the 7030 is very pleasing, and can be adjusted to suit.
Good luck on making your choice.
Rick
**Bruce Conti - BACONTI@xxxxxxx
The reasons I didn't mention the AOR AR7030 are because of the price
and the 15 VDC operation. By the time the AR7030 is outfitted with
upgraded filters necessary for DXing, it's well above the cost of a
Drake R8B. The AR7030 requires 15 VDC operation, which is very
inconvenient for remote/car DXpeditioning. It will operate at 12 VDC,
but the noise floor increases. That doesn't mean that the Drake R8B
doesn't have its eccentricities too. The R8B memory doesn't remember the
time when you remove power. You could keep it plugged in, but it's an
electricity vampire of the worst kind, draining 0.5 amps DC when off.
The instruction manual even recommends that you unplug it when not in
use for extended periods. And the R8B chassis is huge (by today's
standards) in comparison to the AR7030. Following most airline carry-on
limitations, if you carry the R8B then there's little or no room for
anything else.
**Rick Kenneally - Wilton, CT - woodlandview@xxxxxxxxx
I do believe that the 2010 ferrite rod disengages when an external
antenna is plugged in. To test, I just plugged an blank mini phone plug
into the 2010 AM antenna jack, and my strongest local dropped to
nothing.
My best equipment right now is the Quantum QX loop plugged directly
into the 2010's antenna jack. More gain might be possible by using the
inductive coupler to the 2010's ferrite rod (and bypassing the BCB
attenuator circuit that kicks in when you use an external antenna) but
my problem is rarely signal strength. Tighter nulls are more important.
As for Rick Dau's original post, I can offer nothing other than a
great desire to own an R8B, but an inability to justify the expenditure
(that's enough money to notice when you have young kids). Anyway, too
little of my DX is done directly in front of the dials - most is done by
tape and reviewed later while commuting. Therefore, I get more DX by
having multiple lesser receivers than one really good one.
