HOT ITEMS
*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-
I will stop publishing the NewsFlash in a few months (by September). As
the concept of an email newsletter for AM DXers has been proven, it is
time for me to concentrate my time on other projects (SDXM, sticker
collecting, WWI airplane modeling, etc).
IRCA publishes its email newsletter 35+ times/year (I edit this too!!).
You may want to consider joining the IRCA and receive its email
newsletter, the "soft" DX Monitor (SDXM). Price to the world is -
$10.00/year. Send to: IRCA HQ, PO Box 1831, Perris CA 92572-1831
Someone has volunteered to start another newsletter to replace the
NewsFlash. You will be asked to subscribe to the new newsletter as I
will not be passing on my distribution list.

Mega Radio - 630. After initial transmitter-tests last week the
station was off. But today the programme commenced. Signal on 630 kHz is
about 2-3 dB weaker than the DLF on 756 kHz, indicating 100 kW. Level of
mixing-products here is low, only 1386 kHz (756 + 630) is effected.
Surprisingly no 2nd Harmonic on 1260 audible, while the DLF on 756 kHz
produces a strong 2nd harmonic on 1512 kHz.
Transmitter is located near the A2 highway Hannover-Berlin east of
Braunschweig where the A39 leaves to Wolfsburg.

WTAL 1450 in Tallahassee, FL returned to the air on May 13. On May 14
they resumed their talk format.. Syndicated shows include Don Imus, G.
Gordon Liddy, Dr. Laura, and Tom Leykis from the promos I heard them
airing. They were talk before going silent last December. Several of
their shows were lost to other stations in the market. Clear Channel's
sports talker WNLS 1270 added Rush Limbaugh to its schedule about two
months ago, and religious WCVC 1330 picked up several of WTAL's local
talk hosts. WTAL is also airing some adult standards on weekends.
WTAL was purchased by John Wiggins of Unique Broadcasting in Nashville,
TN and the station manager is Fred Willis. The station went silent after
losing their transmitter site to the developers of a new shopping center.
They are now transmitting from a tower on Tallahassee's north side that
was used by WANM 1070 (now WFRF). Fred Willis is also manager of
Unique's new sign-on WJHW 101.9, 40 miles north in Bainbridge, GA.

KDBZ-610-Portland has been operating for several months from the KEX
site in SE Portland. They are ND 5/1 KW. They wanted 50 KW but the FCC
said no.
KXL-750 is directional to the West, but KEX-1190 is ND day, but
directional nights. 1640 does not get out well, even with 10 KW. We had
an apt. in NW Portland for a while. At 2 miles from their transmitter
site, I could hear KDIA under them at night without any trouble. Their 1
KW sounded more like 250w and the 10KW days sounds more like 1 KW.

Miami's newest AM now seems to be on the air and at full power.
WRHB/1020 (licensed to Kendall) is identifying itself as "Radio
Carnivale", and features an all Haitian-Creole (nonbrokered) format...For
now, the format seems to consist of just music, with announcements thrown
in anywhere, like over the music....
I'd love to hear if anyone is successful in DXing the station.

600 WREC Memphis, TN... I got this one at night off of El Salvador/
Panama border 300+ miles west in the Pacific on my DX-398
barefoot. I was surprised.... glad to hear an EE US Station out
that way having been away so far from home. At that point even Art
Bell sounds almost like a scholar. I'm content to hear ANYTHING. I
was afraid in a daydream that I'd only hear SS stations coming
from the US out that way... wouldn't THAT figure? LOL...

Stockholm, Sweden in June 1999, early-mid afternoon with a Sony 7600D
945 Latvia, 300+/- miles, fair-poor
963 Poro, Finland, 200 miles, good
1179 Solvesborg, Sweden, 320 miles, fair after they boosted power to 600
kw at 1600 UTC, inaudible otherwise
1350 Latvia, 300+/- miles, weak
That was it... a world-class city, the capital of a major country, and I
could hear all of four AM stations during the day - all of them over 200
miles away!

Transatlantic DX was fairly decent last night (May 19, 0300-0400 UTC).
France was blasting in at 1206 kHz. England-1089 produced a strong het
against WBAL 1090 although I couldn't get solid audio, but then Virgin
Radio on 1215 had good audio with rock hits. France also noted on 1377
with a het against a good St. Pierre-1375 signal, and 1404, 1494, and
1557. Spain logged on 1296, 1305, 1314, 1359, 1413, 1485, and 1575.
Weak audio noted toward 0400 UTC on 1467 probably from France. Good
transatlantic reception should continue tonight.
**Rick Kenneally - Wilton, CT - woodlandview@xxxxxxxxx
I tried early and late evening, but nothing significant here. St.
Pierre, the usual indicator of high-level openings, was a het only - no
audio coming through. Nothing else heard from the stations that were
strong here back on 4/17.

5/20. Today, courtesy of a traffic jam on the expressway through Boston
going north from Braintree at around 5pm, I scanned the 1600+ kHz band
for stations while near and in Boston. I heard two new stations on 1620
and 1690 kHz and a possible ID on a mystery station on 1670 kHz.
1620 kHz was booming in on the car radio around Morrissey(sp?)
Boulevard in Dorchester. Had Carribean-type music and definite French-
related language by DJ (French-Haitian-Creole?). Both me and my wife
heard an ID that sounded something like "Radio Energie" (Energy?") by
male at 5:10pm local.
1690 kHz was also heard in Dorchester. Heard at 5:20pm local with
unknown artist doing an EE cover of Stevie Wonder's song "This Time Could
Mean Goodbye". Couldn't ID announcer's language due to noise. Heard this
station stronger south of the Chinatown tunnel on Route 93 than north.
Heard presumed Allston-Brighton Free Radio (ABFR) in EE on 1670 kHz
coming in near the Fleet Center. Was playing an English taped speech.
But as I drove farther north on Route 93, ABFR faded out and my mystery
station on 1670 kHz with music faded in (sounded like French-Creole). At
5:35pm, I heard the woman announcer say something like "Rah-dee-oh Pah-
chey" (Radio Pace meaning Radio Peace?). Then went into unknown artist's
cover of Cyndi Lauper's "All Through the Night" in UNID language.
Who knew you could have a mini-DXpedition in your car in Boston?
So next time you're in a traffic jam, check the 1600 kHz band. I heard
5 stations (1620 Energy?, 1640 Nouveaute(p), 1670 Allston-Brighton(p) and
Pace(?), and 1690 UNID). I used to hate traffic jams. :-)

OC on 1640 - no WKSH-WI
Went through the tapes from this. WKSH apparently stayed off for much
of the night - sometimes with open carrier and sometimes off entirely.
The frequency was mush because of the mass of slightly off-frequency HAR
stations. At about 0015 ELT a brief segment of hip hop or urban
contemporary music rose up out of mush. Though I was hoping for the west
coast, my guess is this was probably the low power Haitian programming
station in Dorchester, MA.
Around 0300, the WKSH carrier was off, and there was an interesting
batch of HAR stations all apparently carrying the same short closed loop.
I kept hearing "... broadcast ... Highway Advisory Radio...", but one
overlapping another as if there were at least 3 stations with the same
tape but out of synch. I'm assuming these are the new HARs with testing
tapes in Pennsylvania.

Rick Kenneally, don't totally rule out the West Coast. KPBC has
frequently been heard with hip-hop sounding Contemporary Christian.
However, they sign off at 0100 EDT. KDIA is always dominant with EWTN.
WKSH has been heard once, with both KPBC and KDIA off.
**Pat Martin - mwdxer@xxxxxxxxx
Yes, KPBC does run some Hip Hop Sounding Christian R&B in the evenings.

Per the article done a couple months back by Bill Bowers of Oklahoma. I
decided to find out if the 75 feet of RG58/59 was picking up signals.
When I disconnected the antenna from the coax, yes I did hear some
signals. However when connecting the receiver directly to the antenna
through a 3 foot piece of coax (Yes I took the R8 outside), I found no
different in the noise floor or the signal numbers on the S Meter or the
directivity of the antennas. None. KXL-750-Portland OR and KPAM-860-
Portland both run 50 KW days. KXL is directional to the West and KPAM in
ND. Both run right at S9+20 DB off the 1500 foot Eastern beverage during
the day. With 75 feet of coax connected to the receiver inside the house
or the three feet using the receiver at the antenna. When connecting the
coax to the antenna and the coax to receiver, it kind of nutalizes the
signals not in the path of the Eastern Beverage as far as I can tell.
Other than the locals, the very weak stuff off from the lobe of the
beverage are gone. There is one "big" difference between Oklahoma and
the Oregon Coast, the water in the Ground. I find the noise level to be
much worse in dry areas like our place in Rancho Mirage CA (1 1/2 inches
of rain a year) compared to Seaside (65-100 inches a year).
I was thinking the coax might cause the noise level to increase
somewhat, but I could find no difference. The only antenna I did not
check was the 400' NNW wire with 150 feet of coax. There is no power over
there and I did not want to haul a battery with me to run the R8.
These tests were done on MW (530-1700 KHZ). At least here on the Oregon
coast I find the coax to be fine in running my antennas. It might be
different in a dryer climate.
I did this test for two reasons. The first reason was to find of if my
coax was affecting the directivity and noise floor. The second was to see
if I was getting any loss in the coax. It has been out there a few years,
but only maybe 10 feet is buried. The rest of it runs under the house
totally shielded by the metal around the base of the house which is also
grounded.

In response to user demand, we've now added a one-click link to the
Radio Netherlands Receiver Shopping List on the RN Home Page at
www.rnw.nl. Click on the "Receiver Tests" graphic on the right hand side
in the blue column.
BTW yesterday we added Tom Sundstrom's review of the new Sony ICF-
SW7600GR portable.
You can still access the Receiver Shopping List with a single click
from the Media Network home page at www.medianetwork.nl
One other thing: our Dutch transmission from Flevo on 9895kHz at 0500-
1700 UTC beamed to SW Europe was off the air today due to a technical
problem. They were hoping to get it fixed today, so all being well things
will be back to normal tomorrow. Just in case anyone noticed and was
wondering :-)

Has anybody heard of and if so used an antenna called the "Tiny Tenna".
I happen to come across a web site ( DWM Communications) and they
advertise this type of antenna that works on AM/ FM/ SW and supposedly
scanners as well. It only costs $19.95 plus s&h. They say........"The
TINY-TENNA will often outperform more expensive amplified antennas. A
Field Effect Transistor raises the signal WITHOUT generating noise or
causing overload problems." Thoughts?????

My layoff, your gain. Several radios for sale, some you have seen
before, some not.
GE Superadio [ the first one ] This is one ugly unit. Has fine paint
splatter on it in places, and missing the battery cover. I have it where
the batteries stay in with no problem. A wood base was installed and
painted black to hold the unit upright without tipping easily. If you can
find the battery cover, this base is easily removed and the set will not
tip. The antenna is not the original and has been replaced but if you
think you want the broken one, I still have it. The earphone hole in the
case has been opened up to accomodate modern headphones but needs an
adaptor from mono to stereo. Now you know all the ugly stuff.
Here's the good stuff. All the knobs are there and working perfect with
no scratchiness. All the switches work fine. The antenna was replaced and
although not the original its perfect. The dial lens is fine with no
cracks. The AM reception is absolutely phenomenal and I do not believe
that you can find better fidelity in any AM set. The tuning dial is dead
nuts right on. The FM is unbelievable. It is the finest FM portable
receiver I have ever used hands down. It is as sensitive and selective a
set as I have ever used. Rick Lewis has used this radio and I am sure you
can ask him what he thinks about it.
Its an ugly pup but WOW it KICKS-A for reception. If you buy it, you
will NOT be disappointed in the reception in any way on AM or FM. The AM
is good but the FM is even better.
Price for this guy, $35 plus $8 to ship. Believe me. The reception is
excellent. The sound is great.
Grundig Traveller II 7 band travel radio. 3"X5". MW 520 - 1660, FM 87.5
- 107.9, SW1 5.8 - 6.2 mHz, SW2 7.1 - 7.5 mHz, SW3 9.5 - 10 mHz, SW4 11.6
- 12.1 mHz, SW5 15.1 - 15.6 mHz. Uses 3 AA batteries. Has a clock with
home time and world time with alarm. Very nice and very compact travel
radio $29 shipped anywhere in the US.
Realistic TM-150 AM - FM - FM stereo tuner $18 with shipping and
insurance in the US. AC only. Probably a good candidate for conversion to
AM stereo.
Zenith "Interoceanic" Royal 94 AM/FM/HF radio from 1958. Chassis built
with discrete metal can top hat transistors plug in sockets. Covers 540 -
1600 kc, 1.6 - 3.8 mc, 3.8 - 8.8 mc, 9.0 - 18 mc. It has a crack in the
lens on the left side that has not increased in size in over 2 years.
There is some waviness in the extruded metal grille over the speaker. It
sounds like all Zenith radios of that era, muddy. There is an antenna 4
feet long on it and it is perfect. I have a pic but the lens did not have
the crack then.
$32 for the radio plus shipping. This radio weighs at least 8 lbs so
expect about $10 in the US.
Panasonic RF-1200B AM/FM/MB/PSB/WX "Harbormaster" made in 1971. Have
pic. AM 530 - 1600, MB 1.6 - 4.5 mHz, PSB 148 - 174 mHz. WX 162.55 mHz.
AC or 4 C cells. Has lamp, squelch, antenna and ground connection, AFC,
Local/DX switch, MPX out, earplug jack. Antenna is fine and radio is in
very good shape. Almost mint. Bandselector may have to be cleaned but
does work well. $38 shipped anywhere in the US.

Father Charles Coughlin / Encyclopedia of Radio
I recently came across this page on Father Charles Coughlin.
http://www.fitzroydearborn.com/chicago/radio/sample-charles-coughlin.php3
It turned out to be a sample entry of a work-in-progress: Encyclopedia
of Radio. See also sample articles on WXYZ & Dragnet.
First I've heard of this book, but there's an interesting list of
luminaries on the board, albeit few that I recognize from the dxing &
'listening' communities.
I wrote today for a publication date and got this advice:
"The Encyclopedia of Radio is currently scheduled for publication in
early 2002.
